What motivated to comment on this topic
are the issue and debate surrounding our languages in the current
set-up. It is not out of spontaneity but rather out of a changing
political pressure that this issue has surfaced. Therefore, to
properly understand the origin, evolution and growth of our languages,
the political issues will also have to be studied well. To do this,
one has to be not only a linguist but also, I believe, a politician by
trade. But I am not a politician. In view of this, I shall address the
issue from a linguist’s point of view. If, however, I happen to
touch upon issues that might have political content, it is my wish
that it will be known that I do so only in my capacity as an average
Ethiopian citizen.

The kingdom of Aksum officially
adopted Christianity in the 4th century. But it wasn't before the 12th
century (and up until the 15th) that Christianity spread, along with
the Christian state, to the highlands of central Ethiopia. A
remarkable collection of rock-hewn churches dates from this era. They
were associated with monks, who were considered on a level with saints
and whose lives were often recorded in writing. These monuments and
manuscripts are still very important today as the living memory of
Ethiopia's Christians.

from Ethiopia, Ermias T. Kebede lived in different parts of the world
including France, Italy and now U. S. A., in the city of Chicago.
Picked up the bass guitar when he was 17 and has been playing almost
every kind of music since. He joined a variety of bands in his career,
some of whose members included artists who have played with the likes
of Dizzy Gillespie and Ziggy Marley. Currently 29 years old runs his
own independent label, ETK MUSIC, under which he has released two
albums "Mystic Groove" and " Glimpse of Victory".
A combination of New Age and Reggae music like you have never heard
before, "Mystic Groove" transports you into the planes of
strong rhythms and hypnotic grooves with subtle yet distinct melodies
paving the way. "My primary motivation for completing the project
"Mystic Groove" is to bring forth the mystical rhythms of
Reggae to a wider audience. I have always been moved by the subtle yet
powerful rhythm of the "one drop" beat that mainly
categorizes Reggae music from the rest. I believe different types of
music affect different parts of the human self and Reggae goes right

The Ethiopian Computer Standards Association steering
committee was activated in a resolution of the July, 1997 National
Workshop on Information Technology and Ethiopic Software. ECoSA was
established as an association 6 weeks later at the ECoSA workshop
hosted by the Ethiopian Authority for Standardization. ECoSA is formulated to fill a role between government
and industry in the cooperative establishment of standards for
Ethiopic computing. ECoSA is also ideally positioned in Ethiopia to
coordinate standardization efforts between internal and external
parties. ECoSA's establishment comes at a most crucial time as
Ethiopic computing stadardizations efforts are already underway world
wide and as the first lights of information society are dawning upon
Ethiopia.
