ETRUSCAN

FROM WIKIPEDIA Etruscan was a language spoken and written in the ancient region of Etruria (current Tuscany) and in what is now Lombardy (where the Etruscans were displaced by Gauls), in Italy. However, Latin superseded Etruscan completely, leaving only a few documents and a few loanwords in Latin (e.g., persona from Etruscan phersu), and some place-names, like Parma.

ombrarossapiccola.jpg (728 byte) After ten years of work on the elusive Etruscan Scripts, in 1981 I published a book called, "Catalog of Etruscan Words". In the book I gathered all of the Etruscan scripts which were then extant and broke down the scripts into familiar words and phrases. Using a matrix I listed words which were common among the scripts, and using those words, which were often with repetitive phrases, such as one would find in noun plus epithet structures, i.e.: in liturgical use or in the Iliad, I isolated other words and phrases.

ombrarossapiccola.jpg (728 byte) It seems that there is no need to write an introduction because there are so many books about Etruscans that describe their art, history, religion and every day life.  But even by reading the books, the Etruscan mysteries continue to be hidden. Why? It seems that every detail in Roman history and political life was recorded, why not about Etruscan? The excavated artifacts testify of their great culture at that time. But even that is not the biggest mystery. The biggest mystery is the fact that Romans were sending their sons to the Etruscan school and every one of them after graduation mysteriously forgot Etruscan language and who were they.

ombrarossapiccola.jpg (728 byte) The remains of the Etruscan-Roman city of Volsinii have come to light near the castle, about 100 meters from the Rocca Monaldeschi. They are surrounded by a remarkable 4 kilometers long defence wall, built of large geometrical blocks of tufo. The suurounding hills, especially in the areas of Poggio Sala, Ospedaletto, Vietana, Pantanesca, Gazzetta and Piazzano, are dotted with necropoli made up of chamber and ditch tombs dating between the 3rd century b.C. and the 4th a.C..

Dal 1982 al 1997 la direzione del Centro, divenuto intanto nel 1990 Istituto, è stata affidata a Mauro Cristofani: nuove ricerche si sono aggiunte, in particolare la ricognizione e gli scavi nell’area urbana di Cerveteri e la creazione di un settore di ricerca dedicato alle applicazioni informatiche in archeologia.
