Пословицы и поговорки советского народа

Термином "советский народ" была в 1971 г. названа "Новая историческая, социальная и интернациональная общность людей, имеющих единую территорию, экономику, единую по социалистическому содержанию и многообразную по национальным особенностям культуру, федеративное государство и общую цель - построение коммунизма" (ФЭС, 1983, 620; см. также Ким, 1972). Постановлением XXIV съезда Коммунистической партии Советского Союза советский народ возник как эффект прочного социально-политического и идейного единства всех классов и слоев, наций и народностей, заселяющих территорию СССР. Их общим языком - т.е. языком советского народа - был признан русский язык, что являлось выражением "той роли, которую играет русский народ в братской семье народов СССР" (ФЭС, 1983, 620).

    • Translation: Give up your "hopefully" on the battle-front.
    • Moral: Don't rely on luck in important matters.

    • Transliteration: Bez udobreny ne budet rasteny.
    • Translation: Without a fertilizer, there couldn't be any plants
  • Береги честь смолоду, а оружие - как в руки взял (из русского "Береги платье снову, а честь смолоду")
    • Transliteration: Beregi chest' smolodu, a oruzhiye - kak v ruki vzial.
    • Translation: Guard your honor from your youth, and your weapons once you've got them in hand.
    • Remarks: A play on an older saying, 'Guard (keep, take care of) your clothing from when it's new, and your honor from your youth'.
  • Была коптилка да свеча - теперь лампа Ильича.
    • Transliteration: Byla koptilka da svecha - teper' lampa Il'yicha.
    • Translation: There used to be a wick lamp and a candle - now there exists Ilyich's lamp. (In the sense that Vladimir Ilyich Lenin brought electricity to the Soviet countryside.)
  • Была Россия царская - стала пролетарская.
    • Transliteration: Byla Rossiya tsarskaya - stala proletarskaya.
    • Translation: Russia was tsarist - became proletarian.
  • Было время - любили гармониста, а теперь время настало - любят тракториста.
    • Transliteration: Bylo vremia - liubili garmonista, a teper' vremia nastalo - liubiat traktorista.
    • Translation: When people had free time, people loved the harmonica player, now they don't have time, and love the tractor driver.

  • Видна из Кремля вся советская земля.
    • Transliteration: Vidna is Kremlya vsya sovetskaya zemlya.
    • Translation: The whole Soviet country is visible from the Kremlin.
    • Moral: The government sees all.
  • Врагов бояться - пограничником не быть (из русского "Волков бояться - в лес не ходить")
    • Transliteration: Vragov boyatcya - pogranichnikom ne bit'
    • Translation: Afraid of the enemies - don't be a border guard.
    • Remark: A play on the older saying, 'Afraid of the wolves - don't go into the woods'.

  • Два коммуниста ведут беспартийных триста
    • Transliteration: Dva kommunista vedut bespartijnyh trista
    • Translation: Two communists lead three hundred unaffiliated (lit. party-less).
    • Moral: Two communists can provide leadership and motivation to three hundred people who are not members of the Party.
  • День кантовки - год жизни
    • Transliteration: Den kantovki - god zhizni.
    • Translation: A day of slacking (from hard labor in jail) gives you an additional year of life.

  • Жди не дождя и грома, а жди агронома
    • Transliteration: Zhdi ne dozhdya i groma, a zhdi agronoma
    • Translation: Don't hope for rain or thunder, hope for an agronomist. (ie. Man and science trumps coincidence.)

  • За богом пойдешь - ничего не найдешь
    • Transliteration: Za bogom pojdesh - nichevo ne najdesh.
    • Translation: If you follow god, you won't find anything.
  • Завод красен не планом, а выполнением (из русского "Не красна изба углами, а пирогами")
    • Transliteration: Zavod krasen ne planom, a vypolneniyem.
    • Translation: It is not planning that makes a factory (beautiful), but results.
    • English version: See the bottom line!
  • Зря не болтай у телефона - болтун находка для шпиона
    • Transliteration: Zrya ne boltaj u telefona - boltun nahodka dlya shpiona
    • Translation: Don't chat idly on the phone - an unwary talker is a great find for a spy. (ie. "Loose lips sink ships.")

  • И один в поле воин, если он советский воин (из русского "Один в поле не воин")
    • Transliteration: I odin v pole voin, esli on sovetskiy voin
    • Translation: Even one person in the field is a warrior, if he is a Soviet warrior (from Russian "One person in the field is not a warrior")
  • Икона для духа, что сивуха для брюха
    • Transliteration: Ikona dlya duha, chto sivuha dlya bryuha
    • Translation: An icon is for the mind what moonshine is for the stomach. (from Marx: "Religion is an opium for the people")

  • К нам - на танках, а назад - на санках
    • Transliteration: K nam - na tankakh, a nazad - na sankakh
    • Translation: To us - in tanks, but back - on sleds. (very probably ref. the defeat of Hitler.)
  • Колхоз богат - колхозник рад
    • Transliteration: Kolkhoz bogat - kolkhoznik rad
    • Translation: The collective farm is wealthy - the collective farmer is happy.
  • Кремлевские звезды видишь - смелее вперед идешь
    • Transliteration: Kremlyovskiye zvyozdi vidish - smeleye vperyod idyosh
    • Translation: Seeing the Kremlin stars - going forward braver. (ie. To see the Kremlin stars will make you feel braver in your steps.)
  • Кто не был, тот будет, а кто был - не забудет
    • Transliteration: Kto ne byl, tot budet, a kto byl - ne zabudet
    • Translation: Who has not been, will be; who has been, will not be forgotten. (re: army soldiers)

    • Transliteration: Morye ne visohnet, a narod ne zabluditsya
    • Translation: As the sea will not dry up, so the nation will not lose its way. (ie. Communism is forever.)

  • Наша правда врагу глаза колет (из русского "Правда глаза колет")
    • Transliteration: Nasha pravda vragu glaza kolet
    • Translation: Our truth hurts the enemy. (lit. pokes the enemy in the eyes.)

  • От ленинской науки крепнут разум и руки
    • Transliteration: Ot leninskoj nauki krepnut razum i ruki
    • Translation: Lenin's science strengthens the mind and the hands.

  • Партийный - человек активный
    • Transliteration: Partijnyj - chelovek aktivnyj
    • Translation: A Party member is an active person.
  • Правда Ленина по всему свету шагает
    • Transliteration: Pravda Lenina po vsemu svetu shagaet
    • Translation: Lenin's truth makes great strides all around the world.

  • Раньше жили - слезу лили, а теперь живем - счастье куем
    • Transliteration: Ran'she zhili - slyozu lili, a tyepyer' zhivyom - schastye kuyom
    • Translation: We used to live and spill tears, now we live and build happiness.
  • Раньше сядешь - раньше выйдешь
    • Transliteration: Ran'she syadyesh, ran'she viydyesh
    • Translation: The sooner you get in, the sooner you get out.
  • Раньше церковь да вино - а теперь клуб да кино
    • Transliteration: Ran'she tserkov' da vino - a teper' klub da kino
    • Translation: Before we went to churches and bars - now we go to clubs and cinemas. (Another reference to cultural progress under Soviet rule.) (Note: not night-clubs or some such)
  • Руководитель без народа, что цветок без солнца
    • Transliteration: Rukovoditel' bez naroda, chto tzvetok bez solntza
    • Translation: A ruler without a nation is like a flower without the sun.

  • С кружки по капле - буфетчице дом (из русского "С миру по нитке - голому рубаха")
    • Transliteration: S kruzhki po kaple - bufetchitse dom
    • Translation: A drop from every mug makes for a house for the barmaid.
    • Remark: Plays off the saying, 'A thread from [everyone in] the world makes a shirt for the naked'.
  • Сколько у государства ни воруй, всё равно своего не вернёшь
    • Transliteration: Skol'ko u gosudarstva ni voruy, vsyo ravno svoyego ne vernyosh
    • Translation: However much you steal from your state (government), all the same you won't get your own back
  • СССР - всему миру пример
    • Transliteration: SSSR - Vsemu Miru Primer
    • Translation: USSR - an example for all the world.

    • Transliteration: Hotya i ne plotnik, a stuchat' okhotnik.
    • Translation: Not carpenter, but likes to knock (Note: stuchat' in Russian means both to knock and to squeal on someone, to inform on someone)
