Daisy sollevò il ricevitore e cercò di contattare di nuovo il suo cliente.

Daisy picked up the telephone and tried to get through to her client again.

Il suo cliente, un certo Frank Baccini, proprietario di un emporio di articoli elettrici, non l'aveva pagata per i suoi due giorni di lavoro.

Her client, a certain Frank Baccini, who had a warehouse of electrical goods, had not paid for her two days’ work.
 

Daisy era riuscita a scoprire dove abitava il socio disonesto di Baccini e stava aspettando ansiosamente il suo assegno.

Daisy had managed to discover where Mr. Baccini’s dishonest partner was now living and was anxiously expecting her cheque.

Daisy stava cominciando a pensare che anche il suo cliente fosse disonesto.

Daisy was beginning to think that her client was dishonest too.

Un "Salve, posso aiutarla" molto annoiato fu la risposta all'altro capo del filo.

A very bored "Hello, can I help you?" was the reply at the other end.

Era la voce di una donna giovane, la segretaria di Frank Baccini.

It was a young woman’s voice, Frank Baccini’s secretary.

"Vorrei parlare con il signor Baccini, per favore."

"I’d like to speak to Mr. Baccini, please."

"Spiacente, il signor Baccini è fuori città."

"Sorry, Mr. Baccini is out of town."

"Ma quando torna?" insistette Daisy.

"But when is he coming back?" insisted Daisy.

"Sono spiacente, non lo so."

"I’m afraid I don’t know."

"Può riferirgli che Daisy Hamilton ha telefonato e che vorrebbe parlargli urgentemente?"

"Will you tell him Daisy Hamilton telephoned and would like to talk to him urgently."

"Beh, sì, penso di sì." - fu la risposta del tutto indifferente.

"Well - yes, I suppose so," was the completely unconcerned reply.

Era forse la decima telefonata che Daisy aveva avuto con la giovane in due settimane ma Franco Baccini non si era ancora messo in contatto con lei.

This was the tenth telephone conversation Daisy had had in two weeks with this young woman, but Frank Baccini hadn’t got in touch with her yet.

Daisy era furiosa e decise di andare all'emporio di Baccini per vedere se per caso era lì.

Daisy was furious and decided to go to Mr. Baccini’s warehouse to see if he was there.

Una volta arrivata, bussò alla porta dell'ufficio.

When she arrived, she knocked on the office door.

La segretaria di Baccini proferì con voce monotona: "Avanti, prego."

Mr. Baccini’s secretary said in her monotonous voice: "Come in."

"Ho telefonato molte volte - il mio nome è Daisy Hamilton."

"I’ve telephoned many times - my name is Daisy Hamilton."

"Ah sì? E con chi voleva parlare?" chiese la giovane senza neppure guardare Daisy.

"Really? Who did you want to speak to?" asked the young woman without even glancing at Daisy.

"Voglio parlare con il signor Baccini." rispose Daisy che stava diventando ancora più aggressiva.

"I want to speak to Mr. Baccini," replied Daisy. She was becoming even more aggressive.

"Mi spiace, non c'è." disse la segretaria nella sua solita maniera monotona e andò avanti a leggere la sua rivista.

"I’m afraid he’s not here," said the secretary in her usual monotonous way and went on reading her magazine.

Daisy urlò: "Adesso basta!" e chiuse violentemente la porta.

Daisy shouted "Enough is enough!" and banged the door closed.

Daisy si sentiva piuttosto depressa.

Daisy felt rather depressed.

"So cosa devo fare" pensò, "mi fermerò da Luigi a prendermi un bel banana split."

"I know what I’ll do," she thought, "I’ll stop off at Luigi’s for a nice banana split."

A Daisy piaceva starsene seduta  nella gelateria di Luigi a fare quattro chiacchiere con il proprietario, un italiano dalla mentalità tutta positiva.

Daisy liked sitting in Luigi’s ice-cream parlour and having a little chat with the owner, a positive-thinking Italian.

Mentre Daisy saliva le scale verso il suo ufficio, si sentì un pochino meno delusa dagli esseri umani.

As Daisy walked up the stairs to her office she felt a little less sore about human beings.

Proprio mentre Daisy stava mettendosi un paio di scarpe più comode, qualcuno bussò alla porta ed entrò.

Just as Daisy was changing her shoes to a more comfortable pair, someone knocked on the door and walked in.

Era un operaio in tuta da lavoro.

It was a workman in overalls.

"Mi scusi, signorina - lei è Daisy Hamilton? Dove dobbiamo metterli?" indicando due grossi cartoni sul pianerottolo.

"Excuse me miss - are you Miss Daisy Hamilton? Where shall we put these?" pointing to two large boxes on the landing.

"Sì, sono Daisy Hamilton ma che cos'è che avete lì - cosa c'è in quei cartoni?"

"Yes, I am Daisy Hamilton but what have you got there - what’s in those boxes?"

"Quello grosso è un frigorifero e il più piccolo è una macchina per fare il cappuccino.

"The big one is a fridge and the smaller one is a cappuccino-making machine.

Ha scelto bene, sa, queste sono le migliori marche in commercio."

You’ve chosen well, you know, these are the best makes around."

"Ma io non ho ordinato né l'uno nè l'altra!" esclamò Daisy.

"I haven’t ordered either of these," exclaimed Daisy.

"Ma sulla bolla di consegna c'è il suo nome!" insistette l'operaio.

"But it’s your name on the delivery note!" insisted the workman.

"È già stato tutto pagato - mi deve solo dire dove metterli."

"It’s all paid for - just tell me where to put them."

Daisy stava già preparandosi a rifiutare il materiale quando vide entrare dalla porta anche Frank Baccini.

Daisy was just about to refuse the goods when she saw Frank Baccini coming in the door, too.

"Signorina Hamilton! Sono così desolato per non averla ricontattata prima.

"Miss Hamilton. I’m very sorry I haven’t been in touch.

Spero davvero che non si offenda ma avevo notato che Lei non aveva un frigorifero nel suo ufficio e...questa macchina per fare il cappuccino è una piccola specialità.

I do hope you don’t mind but I had noticed you didn’t have a fridge in your office and... this cappuccino-making machine is a little speciality.

Oh, a proposito ecco il suo assegno per l'eccellente lavoro fatto con un piccolo extra per le sue spese.

Oh, by the way here is your cheque for the excellent work you did, with a little extra for your expenses."

Frank Baccini si accorse che Daisy era stupefatta e aggiunse:

Frank Baccini saw Daisy was astonished and added:

"La mia segretaria l'ha chiamata, spero? Sono stato via per un paio di settimane in luna di miele."

"My secretary did phone you, I hope? I’ve been away for a couple of weeks on honeymoon."

Daisy si riprese. "Beh, no, non l'ha fatto - ma fa lo stesso, signor Baccini."

Daisy recovered herself, "Well, no, she didn’t - but that’s quite all right Mr. Baccini!"
