Bir Adalet konusu |
A Matter of Justice |
Oldukça çirkin görünümlü bir bayan ofise girdi. |
A
rather unattractive woman entered the office. |
Anlam
She
had an inexpressive face and wore out-of-date beige glasses.
|
Her
felt hat looked as though it had been pulled on aggressively
and her loose-styled brown winter coat made her look fatter
than she probably was. |
Büyük
çantasını ofis masasına kabaca koyarken “Siz Victors
Bey’misiniz? diye pat diye sordu. |
“Are
you Mr. Victors?” she asked bluntly, plonking down her
large handbag on his office table. |
Mr.
Victors, who was a rather short but attractive man in his
late forties, tried his charm out on the woman. |
“Evet, hanımefendi. |
“Yes,
madam. |
Siz
dün telefonla randevu almak için arayan bayan
olmalısınız...ehh..” Adam masasındaki kağıtları gözden
geçirdi, “Ah evet, Miss Abbot,değil mi? |
You
must be the lady who telephoned yesterday for an
appointment…er…” The man searched through some papers on his
desk, “Ah yes, Miss Abbot, isn’t it?” |
“Evet. |
“Yes.
|
Size
site yatırımı üzerine geldim. |
I’ve
come about that housing estate investment. |
Tam
anlamıyla nerede inşa edilecek? |
Where
exactly will it be built?” |
“Yunanistan’da Circe adasında. |
“In
Greece on the Island of Circe. |
Reklamda okumuş olabileceğiniz gibi her türlü kolaylığı
içeren lüx daireler olacak. |
As
you probably read in the ad, they’ll all be luxury flats
with every mod con.” |
“Yani
beni iyi bir yatırım olduğuna inandırabilir misiniz? Bayan
sordu. |
“So
you can assure me it’s a good investment?” The woman asked.
|
“Bakın, şöyle söyleyeyim. |
“Look, let’s put it this way. |
Yalnızca bir tane kaldı. |
I’ve
got just this one left. |
Evli
bir çift bu sabah telefonda ilgilendiklerini söylediler
fakat henüz görmediler, dolayısıyla eğer istiyorsanız çabuk
karar vermeniz iyi olur!” |
A
married couple said they were interested on the phone this
morning but haven’t been in yet, so if you want it you’d
better make a quick decision!” |
Bayan
biraz yumuşar gibi oldu. |
The
woman seemed to soften a little. |
“Valla ben her zaman tatillerimi Yunanistan’da geçirmek
istemiştim. |
“Well, I’ve always wanted to spend my holidays in Greece.
|
Bana
tam peşin ücretini söylersiniz size çek yazabilirim. |
If
you tell me the exact amount of the down payment I can write
you out a cheque for it.” |
“Harika, Miss Abbot. |
“Splendid, Miss Abbot. |
topluca biraraya getirelim?” |
Will
you sign this form first of all so we can get all the
paperwork over all in one go?” |
“Elbette. |
“Certainly. |
Bir
bakıvereyim...” Miss Abbot büyük bej gözlükleriyle kağıda
bakarak söyledi. |
Let
me just have a look at it…” said Miss Abbot peering through
her large beige glasses at the sheet of paper. |
O
girdi. |
Just
then the office door opened suddenly and a man and a woman
came in. |
The
woman, who was robust and clearly of African extraction,
produced her police identification. |
“OK
Harry, eski oyuna devem ediyoruz değil mi? |
“OK
Harry, up to the old game again, are we? |
Bu
kez ki ismin ne? |
What’s your name this time?” |
Bayan
Abbot kalın gözlükleri arkasından baktı. |
Miss
Abbot stared through her thick glasses. |
“Müfettiş Quashie!” diyen Harry bayağı korktuğu belli
sandalyesinden kalktı. |
“Inspector Quashie!” said Harry getting up from his chair
and looking very scared. |
“Yine
mi! |
“Not
again! |
Ben
hiç bir şey yapmadım. |
I
haven’t done anything. |
I was
just discussing a business matter with this lady… er… Miss
Abbot!” |
“Kusura bakmayın Bayan Abbot, komiserlikte sizin ifadenize
ihtiyacımız olacak!” Müfettiş Quashie kadına gülümsedi. |
“Sorry Miss Abbot, we’ll be needing your statement down at
the station!” Inspector Quashie smiled at the woman.
|
“Buraya tam zamanında geldik gibi görünüyor!” |
“It
seems we got here just in time!” |
Victors Bey veya Harry çok korkmuş görünüyordu. |
Mr.
Victors or Harry looked horrified. |
“Anladım. |
“I
see. |
Ben
dolandırıldım!” |
I’ve
been stitched up!” |
Müfettiş Quashie kafasını onaylarcasına salladı. |
Inspector Quashie nodded. |
“Protesto yapman gereksiz, Harry, sıkıştırıldın. |
“It’s
useless protesting, Harry, you’ve been nicked. |
Hep
beraber komiserliğe gidelim!” |
Let’s
all get down to the station!” |
Bayan
Abbot Harry’nin kepçelenmesini bekledi ve sonradan,
paltosunun içindeki daha önce o gün polisin taktığı dinleme
cihazını çıkardı. |
Miss
Abbot waited for Harry to be handcuffed and sent off in a
police car and then removed the “wire” inside her coat the
police had put on her earlier that day. |
After
that, she took off her ugly glasses, her hat, and the huge
brown coat to reveal that she was wearing a smart black
jacket and skirt. |
“Doğrusu Daisy, ofis kapısını açınca seni hiç tanıyamadım. |
“Honestly Daisy, when we opened the office door I didn’t
recognise you at all! |
O
kahverengi palto altında çok kötü göründün. |
You
looked terrible in that brown coat!” said Inspector Quashie.
|
Daisy
sırıttı. |
Daisy
grinned. |
Daisy
komiserlikte özel camın arkasından Harry’nin soruştulmasını
seyretmeye davet edildi. |
At
the police station Daisy was invited to watch Harry being
questioned from behind a special glass window. |
“Bak Harry, ne kadar benim ismimin Amelia Quashie olduğu
kesinse, o kadar da sen bir dört, beş yıl hapise
gireceksin!” Müfettiş Quashie’nin en berbat şeyi bile hoş
bir şekilde söyleyiş tarzı vardı. |
“Look
Harry, as sure as my name is Amelia Quashie,” the inspector
said with a friendly smile, “you’ll be going down for
another four or five years!” Inspector Quashie had a way of
saying the most dreadful things in a seemingly pleasant way.
|
“Müfettiş beni hep yakalamaya çalışıyorsunuz ama hiç kötü
bir şey yapmadım. |
“Inspector, you’re always trying to nail me but I haven’t
done anything!” protested Harry. |
“O
bayanla bir daire konusunda görüşme yaptığımı kabul ediyorum
ama... |
“I
admit I was having a conversation with that lady about a
flat but…” |
“Evet,” Müfettiş başını salladı “ortada olmayan ve hiç bir
zaman olmayacak bir daire hakkında. |
“Yes,” Inspector Quashie nodded, “about a flat that doesn’t
exist and will never exist. |
Ama
kendini neyin içine soktuğunu anlamayan zavallı yaşlı
adamdan para aldın. |
But
you did take money from a poor old man who didn’t understand
what he was letting himself in for. |
Beş
bin Pound vermeye dolandırdığın nazik yaşlı vatandaş Duncan
Thornton Bey’i hatırlıyorsun? Gülümseyen bayan polis oldukça
cazip tavırda söyledi. |
Remember that gentle senior citizen, Mr. Duncan Thornton you
conned into giving you five thousand pounds?” The smiling
police-woman said quite charmingly. |
Harry
gergin göründü ama yanıtlamadı. |
Ütün
|
“Bunun yanında, eğer bize o arkadaşın hakkında biraz bilgi
verip yardım edersen... hakimi, Thornton Bey’e bütün
parasını geri verdiğin için eski şeytanlığının geçmişte
kaldığının bilincine vardığına ikna edebiliriz. |
“On
the other hand, if you helped us with a little information
about a friend of yours… we might be able to convince the
judge that as you are giving all the money back to Mr.
Thornton, you have realised that your old evil ways are to
be considered a thing of the past. |
Of
course, there remains the question of Miss Abbot’s
complaint, the lady you were trying to con when we arrived.
|
Onu bir
girişimde bulunmaması için ikna edebilsem..” |
If I
can persuade her not to go ahead…” |
Harry
sözünü kesti “Ah, pekala, Mufettiş. |
Harry
interrupted, “Oh, alright, Inspector. |
Benden ne istediğinizi
bir söyleseniz!” |
Just
tell me what it is you want from me!” |
“Harry sana samimi olacağım, Müfettiş Quashie güzelce
değiştirdiği derin ses tonuyla devam etti, “Ben bütün
kartlarımı masaya koyacağım ve eğer bize yardım etmek
istemezsen seni kaderine teslim eder ayrılırım. |
“Harry, I’ll be honest with you,” Inspector Quashie
continued in her beautifully modulated deep voice, “I’ll put
all my cards on the table and if you don’t want to help us
I’ll just have to leave you to your fate!” |
“Müfettiş – lütfen bana söyleyin!” terleyen Harry artık
ısrar ediyordu. |
“Inspector – please tell me!” insisted the now sweating
Harry. |
“Ben...Kahve Anderson’ı istiyorum!” Müfettiş açığa koydu. |
“I
want… Coffee Anderson!” revealed Inspector Quashie.
|
“Kkk...,”Harry’nin dili dolaştı. |
“Ccc…,” Harry spluttered. |
“Kahve Anderson! |
“Coffee Anderson! |
Şaka
yapıyor olmalısınız. |
You
must be joking!” |
Hayır
yapmıyorum! |
“No,
I’m not! |
As
you know, he is nicknamed Coffee owing to his coffee
addiction but his real forte is giving other people an
addiction, a white-powdered one!” |
Harry
daha da gerginleşti ve kafasını şiddetle salladı. |
Harry
became even more tense and shook his head violently.
|
Müfettiş Quashie tekrar gülümsedi. |
Inspector Quashie smiled at him again. |
“Boşver Harry. |
“Don’t worry, Harry. |
If
you won’t help me, I’ll just need a little longer to nail
that gentleman, but I will. |
Ama
sana yazık” sempatik görünümde Müfettiş kalkıp odadan
ayrılmaya hazırlandı. |
Pity
about you, though,” said the seemingly sympathetic Inspector
getting up ready to leave the room. |
Harry
Harry
heaved a big breath as though it were his last. |
“Beni
tam istediğiniz noktaya getirdiniz Müfettiş. |
“You’ve got me exactly where you want me, Inspector.
|
Biliyorsunuz beni öldürttereceksiniz...” |
You
do know he’ll have me killed…” |
“Her
gün yirmi dört saat polis korunması altında” sanki ne
söyleyeceğine hazırlanmış gibi hızla devam etti.
|
“Police-protection-twenty-four-hours-a-day.” She rattled off
having already prepared what she was going to say. |
“Seni
hiç bulacağını tahmin edemeyeceği bir yere götüreleceksiniz. |
“You’ll be taken to a place where he would never think of
looking for you. |
Ve sonra...” |
And
after that…” |
“Eğer
benim için sonrası varsa, çok uzaklarda bir yerde
yerleşmeliyim. |
“If
there’s an after for me, I would want to be set up somewhere
far away…” |
Daisy
bu konuşmayı özel cam arkasından duyduğunda hoşnutça kendine
gülümsedi çünkü müşterisi Thornton Bey, Harry’e bütün
parasını kaybettiğiyle içini dökmüştü ve şimdi parasını geri
alacaktı ve geleceği hakkında endişe duymadan huzurla
yaşayacaktı. |
As
Daisy heard the conversation through the special glass
mirror she smiled to herself in satisfaction, this was
because her client Mr. Thornton had confided in her when he
lost his savings to Harry, and now he would be getting all
his money back and could live in peace without worrying
about his future. |
Bir
kaç gün sonra Daisy ofisinde kahvesini yudumluyordu. |
A few
days later Daisy was sipping a cup of instant coffee in her
office. |
Biri
kapı zilini çaldı ve Daisy seslendi,”Girin!” Müfettiş
Quashie kapıda göründü. |
Someone rang the bell and Daisy called out, “Come in!”
Inspector Quashie appeared in the doorway. |
“Sizi
rahatsız ediyor muyum Daisy? diye sordu. |
“Am I
disturbing you Daisy?” she asked. |
Daisy
şaşırdı ve polis bayanı gördüğüne sevindi. |
Daisy
was surprised and pleased to see the police woman.
|
“Amelia, lütfen girin ve bana her şeyi anlatın.” |
“Amelia, please come in and tell me everything.”
|
“Daisy kendimi hiç rahat hissetmiyorum.” |
“Daisy, I feel very uneasy.” |
“Pekala, bir kap Earl Grey’le birkaç bisküvi alalım ve
bakalım ne çözümleyeceğiz.” |
“Well, let’s have a cup of Earl Grey and a few biscuits and
see what we can work out.” |
Daisy
elektrik çaydanlığını kaynatmak için su koyarken müfettiş
başını onaylarcasına salladı. |
The
inspector nodded as Daisy put the water on to boil in her
electric kettle. |
“Bildiğin gibi Harry korunmalı bir evde ama bu sabah
küpelerimi takarken düşürüp durdum ve kendi kendime dedim,
‘Amelia, bir şeyler oluyor!’ Birşey kötüye gidecekse
annenannem de aynen yapardı.” |
“As
you know, Harry is in a safe house but as I was trying to
put my earrings on this morning I kept dropping them, and I
said to myself, ‘Amelia, something’s up!’ The same thing
used to happen to my grandmother when something was about to
go wrong.” |
“Ama
ne muhtemelen kötüye gidebilir ki? |
“But
what could possibly go wrong? |
Kahve
Anderson’ın tutuklandığını okudum, tutuklandı değil mi? |
I
read that Coffee Anderson has been arrested, hasn’t he?
|
Yargılaması yakında değil miydi? |
Isn’t
he due for trial soon?” |
“Evet, yargılaması yarın başlıyor! |
“Yes,
the trial starts tomorrow! |
Ama
meğerse, aynı hapiste yatan en tehlikeli suç ortaklarından
Charles Empoli dün serbest bırakılmış, yani – şartlı tahliye
edilmiş ve her akşam polis istasyonuna rapor etmesi gerekli. |
But
apparently one of his most dangerous henchmen, a Charles
Empoli, who was in the same prison as him, got out
yesterday, I mean – he was released from prison on probation
and has to report to the police station every evening.
|
Bu
beni telaşlandırıyor.” |
This
worries me.” |
Tam o
anda polis müfettişin cep telefonu çaldı. |
Just
at this moment the police inspector’s mobile rang.
|
“Alo,
bu Müfettiş Quashie. |
“Hello, Inspector Quashie here. |
Neeee!” |
Whaaat!” Her already big eyes became bigger and bigger and
there was an expression of alarm in them. |
“Ne
rezalettir, beni kimse bu konuda daha önce uyarmadı? |
“Why
in the hell didn’t someone inform me about this before!”
|
Müfettiş gittikçe heyecanlanark dinlemeye devam etti. |
The
Inspector continued listening getting more and more agitated
all the time. |
Daisy, Amelia kriz falan geçirmez diye umdu. |
Daisy
hoped Amelia wouldn’t have a stroke or something.
|
Müfetti Quashie bağırdı,”Dinle. |
Inspector Quashie barked out, “Listen. |
Gözetim takımını hemen bu probleme yöneltin. |
Get
the surveillance team on to the problem immediately.
|
Yirmidört saat gözetim ayarlayın – ben en kısa zamanda
döneceğim!” |
Organise a twenty-four hour watch – I’ll get back as soon as
possible!” |
Polis
bayan telefonunu cebine koydu. |
The
policewoman put her mobile back into her pocket.
|
“Korkarım gitmem gerek, Daisy – durumu tamamen değiştiren
bir gelişme var. |
“I’m
afraid I’ll have to go, Daisy – something has come up that
changes the perspective completely. |
Tabii
eğer...” Müffettiş Quashie’nin kafasında bir plan oluşurken
Daisy’i biraz inceledi. |
Unless...” Inspector Quashie observed Daisy for a moment,
hesitating, as a plan was forming in her mind. |
She
spoke very softly and slowly, “unless you wouldn’t mind
having a teenage girl to stay with you for a while…?”
|
Daisy
masaya bir kutu kurabiye bisküvi koydu. |
Daisy
put a tin of shortbread biscuits on her desk. |
“Hangi genç kızdan bahsediyorsunuz? |
“What
teenage girl are you talking about? |
Anlamıyorum..” |
I
don’t understand…” |
Amelia tried to explain, “It seems that our chief witness,
Harry, has a daughter of nearly fourteen, Alina, who I never
even knew existed, and her mother reported to the police
this morning that her house was being watched by Charles
Empoli, Coffee Anderson’s henchman! |
Anne
The
mother is a social worker and knows the man as she had
already had dealings with him in the past over selling drugs
to youngsters!” |
Daisy
araya karıştı,”Eğer mahkemede Kahve Anderson’ın aleyhine
kanıt verirse karısı ve kızına zarar vereceklerine dair
Harry’e şantaj yapabileceklerini düşünüyorsun?” |
Daisy
interrupted, “And you think they could blackmail Harry,
threatening to hurt his wife or daughter if he gives
evidence in court against Coffee Anderson?” |
“Aslında, bayanla artık evli değil ama, Harry,
majestelerinin zevkine birçok kez tutuklandığından son
yıllardır pek göremediği kızına çok düşkünmüş. |
“Well, the lady’s not his wife any more but apparently Harry
is very fond of his daughter even though he hasn’t seen much
of her in the past few years owing to the fact he’s been
detained at Her Majesty’s pleasure several times!”
|
Daisy
bisküvisini yemek için oturdu. |
Daisy
sat down to munch a biscuit. |
“Harry’nin eski eşi ve kızı da korunma altında bir evde
olsalar daha iyi değil mi?” |
“Wouldn’t Harry’s ex-wife and daughter be better off at a
safe house as well?” |
Amelia kafasını salladı, “Daha da ötesi var. |
Amelia shook her head, “There’s more. |
Hiç
yağmur yağmazken sağnak bastırır. |
It
never rains but it pours. |
Anne
yarın sabah hastaneye ameliyat olmaya gidiyor. |
The
mother is going into hospital tomorrow morning to have an
operation. |
Ters
Something she must have done but it shouldn’t be
life-threatening. |
Tabii, onu hastanede yirmi dört saat göz altında tutabiliriz
ama ya çocuk! |
Of
course, we can have a watch put on her in the hospital
twenty-four hours a day, but the child! |
Halasıyla falan kalmak için giderse onun güvenliğini nasıl
temin edebiliriz ki? |
How
on earth can we ensure her safety if she goes and stays
with an aunt or something!” |
Amelia biraz çay içmek için durakladı. |
Amelia stopped to drink some of her tea. |
“Cardiff’de yaşıyor ve burda, Doğu Anglia’da olduğunu kimse
bilemez, değil mi? ikna edici bir şekilde söyledi. |
“She
lives in Cardiff and no-one would know her here in East
Anglia, would they?” she said convincingly. |
Daisy
istiyorsunuz!” diye protesto etti. |
Daisy
put the biscuit she was eating down, “So you want me to look
after a teenager I’ve never seen before, and who’s never
seen me!” she protested. |
“Boş
ver, canım, başka bir çözüm bulurum – en azından umarım”
Daisy’i, genç bir kızı tehlikede bıraktığından kendini suçlu
hissettirdiğini bilen bayan polis sinsice yanıtladı. |
“Don’t worry, honey, I’ll find another solution – at least I
hope I will,” replied the sly police woman knowing that she
was making Daisy feel guilty about leaving a young girl in
danger. |
Öyle ki,
Kahve Anderson’ın kaybedeceği bir şey yok. |
“The
thing is, Coffee Anderson has nothing to lose. |
Eğer
suçlu olduğu kanıtlanırsa gelecek yirmi yılı rahat
zindanlarda geçirebilir, yani anne ve kız gerçekten
tehlikede, - ama meraklannma, Daisy. |
If
he’s proved guilty he could be in the dungeons for the next
twenty years easily, so mother and daughter are really in
great danger, – but don’t worry, Daisy. |
Senin
sorumluluğun değil. |
It’s
not your responsibility. |
Bu
şanssız çocuğa bakmasına güvenebileceğim başka kimse
düşünemiyorum şimdilik ama bir şekilde olacak. |
I
can’t think of anyone else I would trust to look after this
unfortunate child at the moment but something will turn up…”
|
Daisy
Müfettiş Quashie’nin baskı yaptığını bildiği halde boyun
eğerek,”Oldu o halde, kız ne zaman gelecek? |
Daisy
gave way even though she knew Inspector Quashie was
pressurising her, “Okay then, when will she be arriving?”
|
“Bu
gece kızın, Alina’nın, senin evine getirilmesini
sağlayacağım. |
“I’ll
have the girl, Alina, brought to your home during the night.
|
Oldu
mu?” |
All
right?” |
Daisy
onaylayarak başını salladı. |
Daisy
nodded. |
“Yedek odayı hazırlayacağım. |
“I’ll
prepare the spare room. |
Ama
benim işime ne olacak? |
But
what about my work?” |
Amelia smiled her usual smile when she knew she was getting
her own way. |
“Eminim sen becerirsin, Daisy!” |
“I’m
sure you’ll manage, Daisy!” |
In
the early hours of the morning a car arrived with Alina and
her suitcase and Daisy discreetly beckoned Alina to come
inside whilst the driver of the car handed Daisy the
suitcase and drove off immediately. |
The
fourteen-year-old seemed very shy and just stood and stared
at Daisy. |
“İçeri gel, Alina. |
“Come
in, Alina. |
Birşey yemek veya içmek ister misin? Daisy gözlüklü çocuğa
sordu. |
Would
you like something to eat or drink?” Daisy asked the
bespectacled child. |
“Hayır, teşekkür ederim. |
“No,
thank you. |
Akşam
yemeğimden sonra hiç bir şey yemem. |
I
never eat anything after my evening meal. |
Benim
için iyi değil!” Alina gururlu bir tavırla yanıtladı. |
It’s
not good for me!” replied Alina rather pompously.
|
“Tabii olur, ama bir bardak kokoa içerken birbirimizi
azcık tanıyabilmemiz için mutfağa gel! Daisy önerdi. |
“That’s fine, but come into the kitchen just to get to know
each other a bit while I have a cup of cocoa!” Daisy
suggested. |
Çok
çalışmam gerektiğinden direk yatağa gitmeyi tercih ederim
Bayan Hamilton! Alina, Wales aksanıyla yanıtladı. |
“I’d
prefer to go to bed straight away as I’ve a lot of studying
to do, Miss Hamilton!” Alina replied in her Welsh accent.
|
“Tamam. |
“All
right. |
Ama
bana lütfen Daisy de! |
But
please call me Daisy! |
Bak,
Look,
I’ll take you up to your room and you tell me if you need
anything. |
Oldu
mu?” |
Right?” |
Ertesi sabah Daisy aşağı mutfağa indiğinde Alina’yı masada
bir tarih kitabıyla buldu. |
The
next morning Daisy went downstairs to the kitchen to find
Alina already sitting at the table over a history book.
|
“Genellikle kahvaltıda ne yersin? |
“What
do you usually have for breakfast? |
Alina
– bak! |
Alina
– look! |
Seçebileceğin birçok kahvaltılık hububat var. |
There
are several different packets of cereal for you to choose
from. |
Buzdolabında da yumurta falan var. |
Then
there are eggs and things in the fridge. |
Kendine servis yap!” |
Just
help yourself!” |
Daisy
elinden geleni yaptı ama Alina’yla pek ileri gidemedi. |
Daisy
did her best but didn’t seem to make much headway with
Alina. |
Kız
araya bozması mümkün olmayan bir bariyer kurmuş gibiydi. |
The
girl put up a barrier which seemed impossible to break down.
|
“Bak
arayacak. |
“Look, Alina, I know you’re worried about your mother’s
operation today, but as soon as Inspector Quashie has any
news she will phone me.” |
“Bayan Hamilton...Daisy, beni merak etmeyin. |
“Miss
Hamilton… Daisy, don’t worry about me. |
Babamın ve bizi soktuğu çamurdan haberim var. |
I
know about my father and the mess he has put us in.
|
Müfettiş Quashie bize herşey anlattı. |
Inspector Quashie explained everything to us. |
I
also know that my mother is going into a good hospital and
will have excellent treatment there.” |
“Oldu
“All
right, but you do realise that you’ll have to keep me
company in my office and that you can’t tell anyone any
personal details or go out alone?” |
“Evet, annemi hastanede telefonla veya başka türlü
arayamayacağımı iyi biliyorum. |
“Yes,
I do really understand that I can’t telephone my mother at
the hospital or anything. |
Cep
telefonum bile yok. |
I
haven’t even got my mobile with me. |
Onu
tehlikeye sokabilir!. |
It
might put her in danger!” |
Daisy
Daisy
thought to herself that this seemingly self-sufficient
teenager was determined not to have any relationship with
her and felt useless and disappointed. |
Takiben, bir strateji düşündü. |
Then
she thought of a strategy. |
Yardım arayacaktı. |
She
would ask for her help. |
Sorun
The
problem was, what the goodness could she ask the girl to
help her with? |
Kitaplarından başka hiçbir şeyle ilgilenmez görünüyordu. |
She
didn’t seem interested in anything except her school books.
|
Yemek
pişirebilir miydi? |
Could
she cook? |
Okul
dersleri dışında birşeyde başarılı mıydı? |
Did
she shine at anything except, maybe, scholastic subjects?
|
Daisy
oldukça endişelendi-sonra birşey hatırladı... |
Daisy
felt very worried – then she remembered something…
|
Daisy
noticed that Alina had had practically nothing for breakfast
but thought it wiser not to comment on the fact.
|
O
Later
that morning Daisy asked Alina to accompany her to the
baker’s. |
Pastanede kuyruğa girdiklerinde “Alina sonra atıştırman için
birşey seç” dedi. |
When
they were queing up in the baker’s, Daisy said, “Alina,
please choose something for a snack for later on.
|
Tezgahın arkasındaki bayan Placey, benim arkadaşım. |
The
lady behind the counter, Mrs. Placey, is a friend of mine.
|
Çok
iyidir!” Alina onayladı. |
She’s
very nice!” Alina nodded. |
“Ben
bir yağlı çörek istiyorum lütfen, torba içinde!”Alina
konuşurken yüzü kızardı. |
“I’d
like a buttered tea bun, please, in a bag!” Alina blushed as
she spoke. |
“A! Siz de mi Wales’densiniz?” Bayan Placey sordu. |
“Hey,
do you come from Wales too?” asked Mrs. Placey. |
“Evet, neden, siz de...?” |
“Yes,
why, are you…?” |
“Evet
ben de Wales’denim. |
“Yes,
I’m Welsh too. |
My
name was Hughes before I got married and I was born in
Cardiff!” |
Alina Bayan Placey’e gülümsedi ve sohbete başladılar. |
Alina smiled at Mrs. Placey and they began chatting.
|
“O
zaman burda biraz kalacak mısınız?” Welsh’li bayan sordu. |
“So
are you staying here for a bit?” asked the kind Welsh woman.
|
“Ehh…evet. |
“Er….yes. |
Yalnızca biraz. |
But
just for a while. |
Bayan
Hamilton’da kalıyorum. |
I’m
staying with Miss Hamilton.” |
Daisy’nin iyi arkadaşı Gwen Placey, fazla soru sormaması
gerektiğinin farkına varacak kadar sağduyuluydu. |
Gwen
Placey, a good friend of Daisy’s had enough common sense to
realise that she shouldn’t ask too many questions.
|
“Pekala, benim on dört yaşında bir kızım var, eğer azcık
birinin eşliğini istersen hepberaber çay zamanı Welsh tostu
yiyebiliriz. |
“Well, I’ve got a girl of fourteen and if you’re looking for
a spot of company we can all have Welsh rabbit for tea!”
|
Daisy
rahatlarcasına nefes aldı. |
Daisy
breathed a sigh of relief. |
Biri
Alina ile kontakt kurmuştu! |
Someone had made contact with Al’li ina! |
In
the afternoon Daisy and Alina were in the office when
Inspector Quashie phoned to say Alina’s mother’s operation
had been a success and that the patient had woken up and was
feeling well! |
“Kutluyacak mıyız, Alina? |
“Shall we celebrate, Alina? |
Arkadaşım Luigi’nin dondurma salonuna gidelim mi dersin? |
How
about going to my friend Luigi’s ice-cream parlour?
|
Kesinlikle reddedilemeyecek bir ‘spesiyal’ı var. |
He
has a ‘special’ which is guaranteed irresistible.”
|
Birden kız gözyaşı içinde kaldı ve uzun uzun ağladı. |
Suddenly the girl burst into tears and sobbed and sobbed.
|
“Üzgünüm Daisy. |
“I’m
sorry, Daisy. |
Bana yaptıkların için minnettar olduğumu göstermedim. |
I
haven’t shown you I’m grateful for what you are doing for
me. |
Lütfen beni affet…” |
Please forgive me…” |
“Önemi yok, Alina.” Daisy kızın yanına oturdu ve kollarına
sardı. |
“Not
to worry, Alina.” Daisy sat down near the girl and put her
arm round her. |
“Annen hakkında endişeliydin ve bütün bu esrar dolu olan
biten var. |
You
were worried about your mother and then there’s all this
cloak and dagger business. |
Hepsi
çok stress verici!” |
It’s
all very stressing!” |
“Öyleyse beni affediyor musun? Alina sordu. |
“Then
you forgive me?” Alina asked. |
“Elbette. |
“Of
course. |
Şimdi süper melba soslu şeftali veya çukulata rüyası
dondurmasına doğru gidelim mi?” |
Now
shall we make our way to a super peach melba or a chocolate
dream ice-cream?” |
gittiler. |
The
day went by very happily and at seven o’clock Daisy and
Alina went to Mrs. Placey’s to enjoy a meal. |
Alina
Bayan Placey’i sevdi ve kızıyla, nerde yaşadığı veya kişisel
detayları hakkında konuşmamaya dikkat ederek arkadaşlık
etti. |
Alina
liked Mrs. Placey and made friends with her daughter being
careful never to say exactly where she lived or any personal
details. |
Takip
The
next few days were extremely pleasant and Alina proved a
great help to Daisy in installing a new software on her
computer and cooking the evening meal a couple of times.
|
Daisy
ertelediği her sıkıcı şeyi güncellemeğe karar verdi. |
As
Daisy couldn’t leave Alina alone, she left her detective
work on hold and decided to get up to scratch with all her
bills and payments and other boring things that she always
put off as long as she could. |
Bu
arada Alina’nın annesi ameliyattan toparlanmaya başladı ve
müfettiş Quashie aracılığıyla hemen hergün kızıyla
görüşebiliyordu. |
In
the meantime Alina’s mother was recovering from her
operation and was able to talk to her daughter through
Inspector Quashie almost every day. |
A
week later Daisy and Alina were eating their sandwiches in
the park when Daisy’s mobile rang. |
Harry’nin Kahve Anderson’ın yargılanmasında mahkemede şahit
olarak yer alacağı gündü. |
It
was the day Harry was to appear in court as a witness for
the prosecution in Coffee Anderson’s trial. |
Daisy
müfettiş Quashie’nin derin sesini tanıdı, “Benim, Amelia
Quashie. |
Daisy
recognised Inspector Quashie’s deep voice, “It’s me, Amelia
Quashie. |
Herşey bitti,Daisy!” |
It’s
all over, Daisy!” |
Alina
Daisy’nin şaşkınlığının farkına vardı ve bayağı
heyecanlandı. |
Alina
noticed that Daisy seemed very surprised and became
extremely agitated. |
“Daisy, o annem mi? diye merakla sordu. |
“Daisy, is it my mother?” she asked anxiously. |
Daisy
kafasını salladı ve ona şüphelerini giderici tavırda
gülümsedi. |
Daisy
shook her head and smiled at her reassuringly. |
Yakında bir köpek havlamaya başladı. |
A dog
started barking nearby. |
Daisy
Daisy
got up and moved away so as to be able to hear what
Inspector Quashie was saying. |
Alina
onu arkadan takip etti. |
Alina
followed close behind her. |
“Evet,gerçekten mi? |
“Yes,
oh really? |
Olağanüstü birşey! |
That’s extraordinary! |
Kalp
krizi…! |
A
heart attack…! |
Evet,
hemen Alina’ya anlatacağım.”Daisy Alina’ya halen telefonunu
tutarken gülümsedi. |
Yes,
I’ll tell Alina immediately.” Daisy smiled at Alina still
holding her mobile. |
“Kahve Anderson mahkemede çift kalp krizi geçirmiş ve
hastaneye giderken ölmüş. |
“Coffee Anderson had a double coronary in the courtroom and
died on the way to hospital. |
Meğerse
babana küfredip tehdit ederken birden çöküvermiş.” Daisy
müfettiş Quashie’yle konuşmaya devam etti. “Evet Alina’ya
artık tehlikede olmadığını söyleyeceğim ve annesini sonunda
gidip görebilir!” |
Apparently he was attacking your father verbally and
threatening him when he suddenly slumped over.” Daisy
continued speaking to Inspector Quashie, “Yes, I’ll tell
Alina there’s no more danger and that she can see her mother
at last!” |
Alina
onu annesinin ameliyat olduğu hastaneye götürecek arabaya
hazırlanmak için eşyalarını toparlarken bir an şüphe duydu. |
As
Alina got her things together to be ready for the car which
would be taking her to the hospital where her mother had
been operated on, she hesitated a moment. |
“Fakat, Daisy, annem Kahve Anderson’ın suç ortağını evimizi
izlerken görmemiş miydi? |
“But,
Daisy, didn’t my mother see Coffee Anderson’s henchman
watching our house? |
Bizi
intikam almak için öldürebilir.” |
He
could kill us in revenge.” |
“Artık hiçbir şeyden endişe duymana gerek kalmadı, Alina. |
“You
don’t have anything to worry about any more, Alina.
|
Patron ölünce bütün organizasyon dağılır. |
When
the boss dies, the entire organisation crumbles.
|
Bu
suç ortağı olsun– hiç kimse senin peşinde olmayacak –
herneyse dün hapise geri atıldı çünkü polise rapor etmemiş –
hatırlıyorsan şartlı tahliyedeydi!” |
No
one will come after you – least of all this henchman – and
anyway he was put back into prison yesterday because he
hadn’t reported back to the police – you remember - he was
on probation!” |
Alina
arabaya binerken bavulunu kaldırdığında Daisy’i öptü. |
As
Alina picked up her suitcase to get into the car she kissed
Daisy. |
“Bana
“Thank you, Daisy, for looking after me – later on when my
mother has completely recovered will you come to Cardiff and
stay with us for a while? |
Annemin çok sevineceğini biliyorum!” |
I
know Mum would love you to!” |
Daisy
Alina’nın götürüldüğünü seyredereken onu özleyeceğini
anladı. |
As
Daisy watched Alina being driven away she realised she was
going to miss her. |
Birden telefonu çaldı. |
Suddenly her mobile rang. |
“Daisy, ben Amelia! |
“Daisy, it’s me Amelia! |
Yarın
akşam pek işin var mı? |
Have
you got much on tomorrow evening?” |
“Eh… |
“Er... |
Hayır. Niçin..”Daisy mutsuz bir sesle söyledi. |
no.
Why…” said Daisy in a mournful voice. |
“Biraz eğlendirmeye ihtiyacın var gibi görünüyor – bak o
harika Amerikalı dansözle ‘Casuslar Her Yerde’ müzikaline üç
biletim var. |
“You
sound as if you need a bit of cheering up - look, I’ve got
three tickets for the musical of the year, Gangsters All
Around, with that gorgeous American dancer. |
Bizle
gelmek ister misin – yani ben ve aktörlük çalışan kızımla –
gerçek bir kızlar gecesi geçiririz. |
Would
you like to come with us – that is me and my daughter, who
studies acting, – and we’ll have a real girls’ evening.
|
And
after the theatre there’s that new Italian fish restaurant
near Leicester Square! |
Bilirsin, makarna, balık ve İtalyan beyaz şarap ve…hesap
benden!” |
You
know, pasta, fish and Italian white wine and… it’s on me!”
|
Daisy
gerekiyor?” Amelia yanıtladı, “Pek değil ama lütfen Harry’i
aldattığındaki berbat kahverengi paltoyu giyme!” |
Daisy
accepted immediately and asked, “So I’ve got to dress up?”
Amelia replied, “Not specially, but please don’t wear that
horrible brown coat and hat you had on when we stitched
Harry up!” |
