অপ্রত্যাশিত 

The surprise

ডেইসি দূরভাষ যন্ত্রটি তুলে আবার তার মক্কেলের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করার চেষ্টা করলো।

Daisy picked up the telephone and tried to get through to her client again.

 তার মক্কেল, একজন কোন ফ্রাঙ্ক বেক্কিনি, যার বৈদ্যুতিক পণ্যের গুদাম আছে, তাকে দুদিনের কাজের বকেয়া পাওনা দেননি।

Her client, a certain Frank Baccini, who had a warehouse of electrical goods, had not paid for her two days' work.

 মিস্টার বেক্কিনির অসৎ অংশীদার এখন কোথায় বসবাস করছে তা ডেইসি আবিষ্কার করতে পেরেছিল এবং উৎকন্ঠার সঙ্গে তার চেকের প্রত্যাশা করছিল।

Daisy had managed to discover where Mr. Baccini's dishonest partner was now living and was anxiously expecting her cheque.

 ডেইসি ভাবতে শুরু করেছিল যে তার মক্কেলও অসৎ।

Daisy was beginning to think that her client was dishonest too.

 একটি আগ্রহ হীন গলার স্বর “ হ্যালো, আপনাকে কিভাবে সাহায্য করতে পারি?” উত্তর ভেসে এলো দূরভাষের অপর দিক থেকে।

A very bored "Hello, can I help you?" was the reply at the other end.

 গলার স্বরটি একজন কম বয়েসী মহিলার, ফ্রাঙ্ক বেক্কিনির কর্মসচিব।

It was a young woman's voice, Frank Baccini's secretary.

“আমি মিস্টার বেক্কিনির সঙ্গে কথা বোলতে চাই, প্লীজ”।

"I'd like to speak to Mr. Baccini, please."

 “দুঃখিত, মিস্টার বেক্কিনি শহরের বাহিরে গেছেন”।

"Sorry, Mr. Baccini is out of town."

 “কিন্তু তিনি ফিরছেন কবে ?” দৃড়তার সঙ্গে প্রশ্ন করে ডেইসি।

"But when is he coming back?" insisted Daisy.

 “আমি দুঃখিত বলতে পারছিনা”।

"I'm afraid I don't know."

 “আপনি কি তাকে বলে দেবেন যে ডেইসি হ্যামিল্টন ফোন করেছিল এবং আমার তার সঙ্গে কথা বলা খুব জরুরি”।

"Will you tell him Daisy Hamilton telephoned and would like to talk to him urgently."

 “আচ্ছা – ঠিক আছে, বলে দেব না হয়”, যে উত্তরটা এলো সেখানে কোন উদ্বেগের চিহ্ন নেই।

"Well - yes, I suppose so," was the completely unconcerned reply.

 দু সপ্তাহের মধ্যে এই নিয়ে দশবার ডেইসির সঙ্গে এই কম বয়েসী মহিলার কথোপকথন হল, কিন্তু ফ্রাঙ্ক বেক্কিনি এখনো পর্যন্ত তার সঙ্গে কোন যোগাযোগ করেন নি।

This was the tenth telephone conversation Daisy had had in two weeks with this young woman, but Frank Baccini hadn't got in touch with her yet.

 ডেইসি প্রচন্ড রেগে গিয়েছিল এবং ঠিক করলো যে সে মিস্টার বেক্কিনির গুদামঘরে গিয়ে দেখবে যে তিনি সেখানে আছেন কিনা।

Daisy was furious and decided to go to Mr. Baccini's warehouse to see if he was there.

 যখন সে পৌছল, সে অফিসের দরজায় টোকা মারল।

When she arrived, she knocked on the office door.

মিস্টার বেক্কিনির কর্মসচিবের একঘেয়ে গলা ভেসে এল: “ভেতরে আসুন”।

Mr. Baccini's secretary said in her monotonous voice: "Come in."

 “আমি অনেকবার ফোন করেছি – আমার নাম ডেইসি হ্যামিল্টন”।

"I've telephoned many times - my name is Daisy Hamilton."

 “তাই নাকি? আপনি কার সঙ্গে কথা বলতে চাইছিলেন?” ডেইসির দিকে একবারও না তাকিয়ে প্রশ্ন করলো কম বয়েসী  মহিলাটি।

"Really? Who did you want to speak to?" asked the young woman without even glancing at Daisy.

“আমি মিস্টার বেক্কিনির সঙ্গে কথা বলতে চাই”, উত্তর দিল ডেইসি।

"I want to speak to Mr. Baccini," replied Daisy.

 ডেইসি আরো বেশি আক্রমণাত্বক হয়ে উঠছিল।

She was becoming even more aggressive.

 “আমি দুঃখিত তিনি এখানে নেই”, কর্মসচিব তার স্বাভাবিক একঘেয়ে গলায় উত্তর দিয়ে আবার তার পত্রিকাটি পড়তে শুরু করলো।

"I'm afraid he's not here," said the secretary in her usual monotonous way and went on reading her magazine.

 ডেইসি চিৎকার করে উঠল “যথেষ্ঠ হয়েছে!” এবং দড়াম করে দরজাটা বন্ধ করে দিল।

Daisy shouted "Enough is enough!" and banged the door closed.

 ডেইসি অতি বিমর্ষ হয়ে পরেছিল।

Daisy felt rather depressed.

 “আমি জানি আমি কি করবো, আমি লুইগিতে যাব একটি সুস্বাদু ব্যানানা স্প্লিট খেতে”।‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌

"I know what I'll do," she thought, "I'll stop off at Luigi's for a nice banana split."

ডেইসি লুইগির আইসক্রীম পার্লারে সময় কাটাতে এবং পার্লারের নিশ্চিৎ চিন্তাধারী জনৈক ইটালিয়ান মালিকের সঙ্গে গালগল্প করতে পছন্দ করতো।

Daisy liked sitting in Luigi's ice-cream parlour and having a little chat with the owner, a positive-thinking Italian.

 ডেইসি যখন সিঁড়ী ভেঙ্গে তার অফিসে পৌছলো সে মানুষ জাতীর সম্পর্কে একটু কম বিতশ্রদ্ধ ছিল।

As Daisy walked up the stairs to her office she felt a little less sore about human beings.

 ঠিক যেই সময় ডেইসি তার যুতো পাল্টে আরামদায়ক এক জোড়া যুতোয় পা গলাচ্ছিল, কেও একজন দরজায় টোকা মেরে ভেতরে এলো।

Just as Daisy was changing her shoes to a more comfortable pair, someone knocked on the door and walked in.

 একজন সর্বাঙ্গব্যাপি ঢিলে জামা পরিহিত কাজের লোক।

It was a workman in overalls.

“ক্ষমা করবেন – আপনি কি কুমারী ডেইসি হ্যামিল্টন? এইগুলি কোথায় রাখব?” আঙ্গুল দিয়ে দুটি বড় বাক্সের দিকে নির্দেশ করে।

"Excuse me miss - are you Miss Daisy Hamilton? Where shall we put these?" pointing to two large boxes on the landing.

 “হ্যা, আমি ডেইসি হ্যামিল্টন কিন্তু কি এনেছেন আপনি – ঐ বাক্সগুলিতে কি আছে?”

"Yes, I am Daisy Hamilton but what have you got there - what's in those boxes?"

 “বড়টা একটা ফ্রীজ আর ছোটোটা একটা কফি-তৈরি করার যন্ত্র। আপনি ভাল পছন্দ করেছেন, এইগুলি বাজারের সবথেকে উৎকৃষ্ট নির্মাণ”।

"The big one is a fridge and the smaller one is a cappuccino-making machine. You've chosen well, you know, these are the best makes around."

 “আমি এর কোনোটাই ফরমাস করি নি”, বিস্ময়ের সাথে বললো ডেইসি।

"I haven't ordered either of these," exclaimed Daisy.

 “কিন্তু বিলি করার কাগজে আপনার নাম আছে”! দৃড়তার সঙ্গে বলে লোকটি।

"But it's your name on the delivery note!" insisted the workman.

 “এইসবের পাওনাদি মেটান হয়ে গেছে – আমাকে শুধু বলুন কোথায় রাখব”।

"It's all paid for - just tell me where to put them."

 ডেইসি পণ্যদ্রব্যগুলি প্রত্যাখ্যান করতেই যাচ্ছিল যখন সে দেখলো  যে ফ্রাঙ্ক বেক্কিনি দরজা দিয়ে ভেতরে আসছেন।

Daisy was just about to refuse the goods when she saw Frank Baccini coming in the door, too.

 “কুমারী হ্যামিল্টন। আমি দুঃখিত আমি আপনার সঙ্গে সাক্ষাৎ করিনি”।

"Miss Hamilton. I'm very sorry I haven't been in touch.

 “আমি আশা করি আপনি কিছু  মনে করবেন না কিন্তু আমি খেয়াল করেছিলাম যে আপনার অফিসে কোনো ফ্রিজ নেই এবং...এই কফি-তৈরি করার যন্ত্রটি একটি বিশেষ বস্তু”।

"I do hope you don't mind but I had noticed you didn't have a fridge in your office and... this cappuccino-making machine is a little speciality.

 “ওহ, প্রসঙ্গতঃ এই আপনার চেক যে পরমোৎকৃষ্ঠ কাজ আপনি করেছেন তার জন্য, সঙ্গে আপনার খরচ-পাতির জন্য অতিরিক্ত কিছু”।

"Oh, by the way here is your cheque for the excellent work you did, with a little extra for your expenses."

 ফ্রাঙ্ক বেক্কিনি দেখলেন যে ডেইসি বিস্ময়বিহ্বল হয়ে গেছে এবং যোগ করলেন:

Frank Baccini saw Daisy was astonished and added:

 “আমার কর্মসচিব আপনাকে ফোন করেছিল, আশা করি? আমি দু সপ্তাহের জন্য মধূচন্দ্রিমায় বাহিরে গিয়েছিলাম”।

"My secretary did phone you, I hope? I've been away for a couple of weeks on honeymoon."

 ডেইসি নিজেকে সামলে নিল, “না, সে করেনি – তবে সেটা ঠিক আছে মিস্টার বেক্কিনি!”

Daisy recovered herself, "Well, no, she didn't - but that's quite all right Mr. Baccini!"
