The surprise

Daisy pran telefòn lan pou li ka eseye rele kliyan lan ankò.

Daiy picked up the telephone and tried to get through to her client again.

Kliyan lan, yo gwozotobre ki rele Frank Baccini, ki te genyen yon gwo magazen materyèl elektrik, pat janm peye l pou de jou travay li te fè pou li.

Her client, a certain Frank Baccini, who had a warehouse of electrical goods, had not paid for her two days' work.

Daisy rive dekouvri kote yon patnè malonèt mesye Baccini te rete, epi li tap tann lajan l matin, midi, swa.

Daisy had managed to discover where Mr. Baccini's dishonest partner was now living and was anxiously expecting her cheque.

Daisy was beginning to think that her client was dishonest too.

Hello, can I help you?" was the reply at the other end.

It was a young woman's voice, Frank Baccini's secretary.

“Mwen ta renmen pale ak mesye Baccini, silvouplè”

"I'd like to speak to Mr. Baccini, please."

“Li pa la non, lal fè yon ti vwayaj.”

"Sorry, Mr. Baccini is out of town."

“Men ki lè lap tounen?” Daisy mande fi-a.

"But when is he coming back?" insisted Daisy.

“Mwen pa konnen non.”

"I'm afraid I don't know."

“Di l silvouplè ke Daisy  Hamilton te rele l epi li ta renmen pale ak li jodiya menm.”

"Will you tell him Daisy Hamilton telephoned and would like to talk to him urgently."

“Enbyen wi, ma wè sa,” fi-a reponn tankou sa pa gade l.

"Well - yes, I suppose so," was the completely unconcerned reply.

This was the tenth telephone conversation Daisy had had in two weeks with this young woman, but Frank Baccini hadn't got in touch with her yet.

Daisy was furious and decided to go to Mr. Baccini's warehouse to see if he was there.

When she arrived, she knocked on the office door.

Mr. Baccini's secretary said in her monotonous voice: "Come in."

“Mwen rele plizy’e fwa isi-a – non mwen se Daisy Hamilton.”

"I've telephoned many times - my name is Daisy Hamilton."

“Tout bon? Ak kil’es ou vle pale?” jèn fi-a mande Daisy san l pa men leve tèt li pou l gade Daisy.

"Really? Who did you want to speak to?" asked the young woman without even glancing at Daisy.

“Mwen bezwen pale ak mesye Baccini,” Daisy reponn.

"I want to speak to Mr. Baccini," replied Daisy.

Daisy kòmanse vin pi agresif.

She was becoming even more aggressive.

“Mesye Baccini pala,” sekretè-a reponn nan menm vye vwa l la epi li kontinye li liv ki te nan menn lan.

"I'm afraid he's not here," said the secretary in her usual monotonous way and went on reading her magazine.

Daisy fè yon sèl rele sou li, “Sap fini jodiya” epi li frape pòt la epi l vire do l.

Daisy shouted "Enough is enough!" and banged the door closed.

Daisy te santi l dekouraje.

Daisy felt rather depressed.

“Mwen konen sa mwen pral fè,” li reflechi, “Mwen pral pase kay Luigi pou pran yon banana split.”

"I know what I'll do," she thought, "I'll stop off at Luigi's for a nice banana split."

Daisy te renmen ale chita kay Luigi-a pou fè yon ti pale ak mèt salon krèm lan ki te yon bon Italyen ki toujou gen bon ti paròl pou moun.

Daisy liked sitting in Luigi's ice-cream parlour and having a little chat with the owner, a positive-thinking Italian.

As Daisy walked up the stairs to her office she felt a little less sore about human beings.

Just as Daisy was changing her shoes to a more comfortable pair, someone knocked on the door and walked in.

It was a workman in overalls.

"Excuse me miss - are you Miss Daisy Hamilton? Where shall we put these?" pointing to two large boxes on the landing.

“Wi, se mwen ki Daisy Hamilton, men kisa w pote la – kisa ki nan bwat sa yo?”

"Yes, I am Daisy Hamilton but what have you got there - what's in those boxes?"

“Pi gwo bwat la gen yon frijidè e ti piti-a genyen yon machin pou fè cappuccino. Ou konen ke w te fè yon bon chwa, sa yo se pi bon mak ki genyen.”

"The big one is a fridge and the smaller one is a cappuccino-making machine. You've chosen well, you know, these are the best makes around."

“Men mwen pat kòmande okenn machin,” Daisy di ak yon sezisman.

"I haven't ordered either of these," exclaimed Daisy.

“Men se non paw ki sou n’ot pou livrezon an!” mesye-a fè Daisy konnen.

"But it's your name on the delivery note!" insisted the workman.

“Yo deja peye pou yo – djès fè m konnen ki kote pou mwen mete yo.”

"It's all paid for - just tell me where to put them."

Daisy ta pral refize machin yo lè li wè Frank Baccini kap antre nan pòt la tou.

Daisy was just about to refuse the goods when she saw Frank Baccini coming in the door, too.

“Matmwazèl Hamilton mwen regrèt anpil ke m pat gentan rele w.

"Miss Hamilton. I'm very sorry I haven't been in touch.

Mwen espere ke ou pap fache paske m wè ke ou pat genyen yon frijidè nan biwo lan epi… machin capuccino sa-a se yon ti espesyalite.

I do hope you don't mind but I had noticed you didn't have a fridge in your office and... this cappuccino-making machine is a little speciality.

O an pasan, men chèk ou-a pou bon travay ke w te fè pou mwen ak yon ti diplis pou depans ou yo.”

Oh, by the way here is your cheque for the excellent work you did, with a little extra for your expenses."

Frank Baccini saw Daisy was astonished and added:

“Mwen espere ke sekretè m lan te rele w? Sa fè kèk semèn ke mwen te nan lin de myèl mwen.”

"My secretary did phone you, I hope? I've been away for a couple of weeks on honeymoon."

Daisy repran tèt li,”Ebyen, non, li pat di m sa – men pa gen pwoblèm mesye Baccini!”

Daisy recovered herself, "Well, no, she didn't - but that's quite all right Mr. Baccini!"
