The search for Lorna

Daisy Hamilton era una detective privata. Aveva trent'anni e faceva la detective da due anni.

Daisy Hamilton was a private detective. She was thirty years old and had been a detective for the past two years.

Ogni mattina andava in ufficio  per aspettare delle telefonate o aprire la porta a clienti che necessitavano i suoi servizi.

Every morning she went to her office to wait for phone calls or open the door to clients needing her services.

Daisy non era ancora molto ben conosciuta  ma occasionalmente della gente le telefonava per l'inserzione che aveva messo sul giornale locale.

Daisy wasn't very well known yet but occasionally people telephoned her from the advertisement she had put in the local newspaper.

Una mattina verso le undici qualcuno bussò alla porta del suo ufficio. Era una signora grassa che indossava una stola di pelliccia  attorno al collo.

One morning at about eleven o'clock someone knocked on her office door. It was a fat lady who wore a fur around her neck.

"Salve, posso esserLe utile?" Daisy chiese alla signora. "Prego, si accomodi"

"Hello, can I help you?" Daisy asked the lady. "Please come and sit down."

"Oh sì davvero! Ho bisogno del Suo aiuto disperatamente. Lorna, la mia piccola è scomparsa. Non so più che cosa fare."

"Oh yes indeed! I need your help desperately. Lorna, my little one has disappeared. I don't know what to do."

Daisy offrì alla signora grassa una tazza di caffè istantaneo e attese i dettagli.

Daisy offered the fat lady a cup of instant coffee and awaited the details.

La signora grassa si sedette pesantemente e posò la sua grossa borsa di cuoio rosso sulla scrivania di Daisy.

The fat lady sat down heavily and put her large red leather handbag on Daisy's desk.

"Per cortesia, mi dica tutto, signora..."

"Please tell me everything - Mrs. ......?"

"Mi chiamo Edwina Humphries. Temo che mi chiederanno del denaro  - Temo che Lorna sia stata rapita."

"Mrs. Edwina Humphries is my name. I am afraid they will ask me for money - I'm afraid Lorna has been kidnapped!"

"Ma è terribile, signora Humphries. Anche il signor Humphries pensa che Lorna sia stata rapita?

"That's terrible, Mrs. Humphries. Does Mr. Humphries, too, think Lorna has been kidnapped?"

"A mio marito non interessa  se Lorna è stata rapita o no!"
"Davvero, signora Humphries? Ma Suo marito è il vero padre di Lorna?

"My husband is not interested if Lorna has been kidnapped or not!"
"Really, Mrs. Humphries? But is your husband Lorna's real father?"

"Scusi, ma non capisco. Abbiamo comprato Lorna assieme" rispose la signora Humphries.
"Avete comprato...signora Humphries, questo è illegale, lo sapete..."

"I don't know what you mean. We bought Lorna together," replied Mrs. Humphries.
"You bought ............Mrs. Humphries, that's illegal, you know."

"No, non lo è, non in India."
"Avete comprato Lorna in India?"
"Ma certo!  E mi tiene sempre una gran compagnia, sa ."

"No it isn't, not in India!"
"You bought Lorna in India?"
"Yes indeed! And she always keeps me great company, you know."

La signora Humphries aprì la sua enorme borsa di pelle per tirar fuori un fazzoletto.
Con orrore Daisy vide una creatura sinuosa uscir fuori dalla borsa.

Mrs. Humphries opened her huge leather bag to pull out a handkerchief.
With horror Daisy saw a wiggling creature come out of that bag.

"Signora Humphries - la metta via immediamente" urlò Daisy.
"Cosa? Oh Lorna - Ti ho trovata finalmente" disse la signora Humphries. "Ti nascondevi nella mia borsa - birichina."

"Mrs. Humphries - move that away immediately!" screamed Daisy.
"What? Oh Lorna - I've found you at last!" said Mrs. Humphries."You hid in my bag - you naughty girl!"

"Signora Humphries, questa è Lorna?"
"Sì, il nostro serpente del Bengala. Grazie mia cara. No, non penso di aver più bisogno dei suoi servizi.

"Mrs. Humphries. This is Lorna?"
"Yes, our Bengali swamp snake. Oh thank you my dear. No, I don't think I need your services any longer!"

Mentre Daisy chiudeva la porta dopo che la signora Humphries era uscita, si ripromise di scrivere nell'inserzione: niente animali, niente serpenti.

As Daisy shut the door after Mrs. Humphries, she made a mental note to write in the advertisement: no animals, no snakes.
