Daisy
Nöbette |
Night
Watch |
She arrived at her office with a paper bag in her
hand containing fresh cream buns at a quarter to eight and was dying for a
cup of coffee.
Anahtarı tam deliğe sokmuştu ki, bir
kadın sesi, “Kapı açık Daisy,” diye bağırdı.
As she put the key in the lock, a woman’s voice
called out, "It’s open, Daisy."
Bu temizlikçi kadın Pam’di.
It was Pam, the cleaner.
“Kahvaltı yapar mısın Pam?” diye
sordu Daisy gülümseyerek.Sonra, Pam’in ağlamış olduğunu
farketti.
"How about some breakfast, Pam?" said Daisy
with a smile and then noticed Pam had obviously been crying.
“Pam,
ne oldu sana?
"Pam, whatever has happened?
Gel buraya otur ve benimle kahvaltı et.
Come on sit down and have some breakfast with me.
Lütfen, seniüzen şey her neyse söyle bana.”
Please tell me what’s bothering you."
Pam iki çocuğuna bakan çok çalışkan
bir kadındı.
Pam was a hard-working woman with two children to
bring up.
Bütün binanın, yani, yedi ofisin temizliğini
o yapıyordu.
She did the cleaning for the whole building which
meant seven offices.
“Jim çocuklar konusunda gene bana baskı yapıyor.
"Jim has been on to me again about the children.
Biliyorsunuz, yasal olarak onları görmeye hakkı
yok. Ama bu işin peşini bırakmıyor.”
You know he has no legal right to see them and he
really couldn’t care less about them, and never has."
“Haydi çay suyu koyalım.”
"Let’s put the kettle on."
Daisy began preparing the instant coffee and offered
Pam a bun,
“Neden olup biten her şeyi baştan anlatmıyorsun
Pam?”
"Now, why don’t you start from the
beginning?"
Pam çok düşünceli ve yorgun görünüyordu.Anlatmaya
devam etti:
Pam looked extremely troubled and went on:
“Siz de biliyorsunuz, boşandığımızda
Jim çocukları görme talebinde bile bulunmamıştı.
"You see, when we got divorced he didn’t even
ask to see his children.
Şimdi beş parasız kalınca, çocukları
benden kaçırmakla tehdit edip benden para istiyor.”
Now he’s got no money, he’s trying to torture me
into giving him some with the threat that otherwise he’ll get the
children away from me."
“Bence bunu yapması pek kolay olmaz, Pam,”
dedi Daisy.
"I don’t think he can do that easily,
Pam," Daisy reasoned.
Pam bir kremalı kek daha aldı.
Pam accepted another bun.
“Biliyorum Daisy, kolay olmaz ama Jim çok
kincidir. Beni, hayatımı cehenneme çevirmekle tehdit etti.”
"No Daisy, not easily, but he’s very
vindictive and he’s threatened to make my life a hell."
“Pekala, bekleyelim ve neler olduğunu görelim.
"Well, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Bak Pam, eğer Jim iyice çıldırırsa
yapacağın tek şey polis çağırmak.”
Look, if he gets violent all you have to do is call
the police."
“Jim’i çok
iyi tanıyorum. Eğer istediği parayı vermezsem söylediklerini
yapar.”
"I know Jim, if I don’t give him money he’ll
be as good as his word."
Üç gün sonra Daisy’nin telefonu çaldı.
Three days later Daisy got a telephone call.
“Merhaba
Daisy, ben Pam. Aklımı kaçırmak üzereyim.
"Daisy, it’s Pam. I’m going round the bend.
Jim her gece meyhaneler kapanınca, yatak odamı
Jim’s been coming round to my house every night
after the pubs close trying to see through my bedroom window and making
strange noises.
Benim usanıp pes etmem ve istediği parayı
vermem için uğraşıyor.
He’s trying to get on my nerves so that I’ll give
in and hand over all the money he asks for.
Üç gecedir hiç uyuyamadım.”
I haven’t slept for three days."
“Jim’i polise şikayet ettin mi?”
" Have you informed the police about it?"
“Jim bana telefon edip, eğer onu polise şikayet
edersem benim ruh hastası olduğumu ve hayal gördüğümü,
bu yüzden de çocukların vesayetini alamayacağımı söylemekle
tehdit etti.
"Jim telephoned me just now and said that if I
call the police in, he’ll tell them I’m imagining things and
hysterical and mentally ill and shouldn’t have his children in my
custody.
Benşimdi
ne yapacağım? Kendimi çok kötü hissediyorum.”
What am I going to do Daisy? I
feel desperate."
“Pekala
Pam, sen bana adresini ver. Ben gelip ne yapacağımıza karar
vereyim.”
"All right Pam, tell me your address and I’ll
see what I can do."
Daisy, elektronik eşyalar satan Trends
adlı dükkana girip, dükkanın sahibi Bay Ranjee ile görüşmek
istediğini söyledi.
Daisy went round to Trends, her local
television, radio and computer shop, and asked to speak to Mr. Ranjee, the
owner of the shop.
“Bay Ranjee, sizden birkaç günlüğüne bir
kamera ödünç alabilir miyim?”
"Mr. Ranjee, do you think you could lend me a
camcorder for a couple of days?"
Daisy birkaç ay önce, Bay Ranjee’nin dükkanını
soyan hırsızı bulmuştu.
Daisy had found the thief who was stealing from the
shop a few months’ ago
and Mr. Ranjee had always said that if ever she
needed something, please to come and ask for it.
“Tabii ki veririm Bayan Hamilton. Karanlıkta çekim
yapan bir kamera istiyorsunuz anladığım kadarıyla.
"Of course, Miss Hamilton. You say you want one
that works in the dark.
O zaman şunu alın.Nasıl kullanılacağını
biliyor musunuz? Ben size göstereyim nasıl kullanacağınızı”
Mm - take this. Do you know how to use it? Let me
show you."
Bay Ranjee, yarım saat boyunca, kamera kullanmanın
inceliklerini anlatttı.
Mr. Ranjee spent the next half hour teaching Daisy
some elementary camcorder tricks.
Daisy, o gece saat on gibi, yanına kamerasını
ve yağmurluğunu alarak Pam’in evine gitmeye karar verdi.
Daisy decided to go around to Pam’s house at about
ten that evening armed with the camcorder and its rain-proof covering.
She also had a whistle in her pocket and a Mars bar
to while away the time.
“Hayır olamaz, yağmur başladı,”
diye kendi kendine söylendi Daisy.
"Oh no! It’s beginning to rain," Daisy
exclaimed to herself.
Ne zaman gece çalışması gerekse, o
gece mutlaka yağmur yağıyordu.
Whenever she had a job on at night it invariably
rained.
O akşam en azından yanına yağmurluğunu
ve beresini almıştı.
Fortunately, this time, she had brought a plastic mac
and hood with her.
Gecenin o saatinde, ortalıkta ancak birkaç kişi
görünüyordu.
At that time of night there were few people around.
Pam had explained that she lived in an old cottage,
and that her bedroom was round the back facing the garden.
Daisy Pam’in evine vardığında arka
When Daisy arrived, she went to the back of the
cottage, climbed over the low fence
Yıkık dökük bir kulübe vardı bahçede.
and saw there was a tumble-down tool shed at the
bottom of the garden.
“İşte bu kulübenin içinde saklanıp
o canavarın gelmesini bekleyebilirim.
"That’s where I’ll hide and wait for that
monster.
Benim sevgili dostum Pam’i rahatsız etmeye nasıl cüret edebilir o,” diye
düşündü Daisy.
How dare he try to hurt dear Pam," thought
Daisy.
Daisy kulübenin içinde beklerken, çiçek saksısı
gibi bir şeyin bahçeye fırlatıldığını
duydu
Once inside the shed Daisy heard something like a
flower-pot fall to the ground outside
Ve kulübenin küçük kirli penceresinden görünmemek
için iyice çömeldi.
and crouched down so that she couldn’t be seen
through the small dirty window.
Kediler toplanıyordu orada galiba çünkü
miyavlama sesleri geliyordu.
Apparently it was a meeting-place for cats, for she
heard miaowing.
“Pam’in eski kocasının her geceki garip
sesleri çıkarmasını sağlamak için bu kedileri
buradan uzaklaştırmalıyım çünkü bunlardan korkup
gidebilir.”
"Certainly if Pam’s ex-husband wants to repeat
his previous performance, I’d better get rid of those cats so he’s not
scared off."
She opened the shed door warily and threw an old shoe
she had found inside at the cats, who hastily vanished.
Şimdi her çay tekrar eski sessizliğine bürünmüştü.
Now everything was quiet again.
İki saattir o soğuk ve rutubetli yerde
hareketsiz oturmaktan Daisy’nin kasları tutulmuştu. Oturduğu
eski sandalyeden kalktı.
Two hours later Daisy, very stiff from the damp and
cold, got up from the ancient wicker chair she had been sitting on.
“Daha fazla dayanamayacağım burada kımıldamadan
böyle oturmaya,”diye sızlandı kendi kendine.
"I can’t stand it much longer" she moaned
to herself.
Sonra, birinin çamurda şap şap sesler çıkararak
yürüdüğünü duyar gibi oldu.
Then she thought she heard the noise of Wellington
boots sloshing through the damp foliage.
Birisi eve doğru yaklaşıyordu.
Someone was creeping towards the house.
Onca zamandır hareketsiz durmaktan Daisy’nin
kolları ağrımıştı ve elindeki kamerayı
az daha düşürecekti.
Daisy’s arms ached because of the enforced inaction
and she nearly dropped the camcorder.
She stepped out of her shoes and slipped out of the
partially-open shed door.
Tam o sırada bütün lambaları yanan bir
araba geçti oradan ve Daisy arabanın ışığıyla
her şeyi tam olarak görebildi:
At that very moment a car passed by with its lights
fully on and Daisy could see quite clearly:
Pam’in eski kocası gizlice Pam’in yatak odasını
gözlüyordu.
Pam’s husband was spying into her bedroom window.
Daisy hemen kamerayı açtı.
Daisy managed to act quickly and turned the camcorder
on.
Artık yağmur sadece çiseliyordu.
It was only drizzling now.
Pam’in kocası pencereden eski karısına
bağırıp onu tehdit ediyordu.
Pam’s husband began shouting through the window at
his ex-wife and threatening her.
Daisy bütün o sahneyi çekiyor ve bütün tehdit sözlerini
kaydediyordu.
Daisy was filming the scene and recording all the
menacing words.
O sırada kameradan korkunç bir ses gelmeye başladı.
Suddenly the camcorder made a strange whirring sound.
“Belki de kaset bozulmuştur,” dedi Daisy
telaşla.
"Maybe the tape’s blocked!" panicked
Daisy.
Kamerayı kapatmaya çalışırken
yanlışlıkla yanlış düğmeye basınca, o
korkunç ses daha da şiddetlendi.
She tried to turn it off but pushed the wrong button
and the whirring sound increased.
Tam o sırada Pam’in eski kocası onu
At this point Pam’s ex-husband became aware of it
and turned round furiously.
Birinin onu gözetlediğinin farkına vardı
ve çok kötü küfrettti.
He realized someone was watching him and swore
profusely.
Then he made towards Daisy as though to hit her.
Daisy öncelikle kamerayı güvene almak istedi
ve Jim’e arkasını dönüp bağırmaya başladı.
Daisy’s first thought was to protect the camcorder
with her body, she turned her back on him and started yelling.
Sanki o bağırma sonsuza kadar sürmüş
gibi geldi Daisy’ye
It seemed to her that her yelling lasted an eternity.
Birdenbire, insanın gözünü kamaştıran
bir el feneri ikisini de aydınlattı.
Suddenly a strong torch light shone on both of them.
“Neler oluyor orada?
"What’s going on here?"
Bunları söyleyen, gayet cidddi görünen bir
kadın polisti.
It was a police-woman, looking very determined.
“Çitten atlarken gördüm sizi,”dedi
polis elfenerinin ışığıyla adamı işaret
ederek.
"I saw you climbing over the fence,"
indicating the man with the light of her torch
“İkiniz de sessizce buraya gelin şimdi.
"Come quietly, both of you.
Sizi meskene tecavüzden tutukluyorum ve…”
I'm arresting you for trespassing and ..."
O sırada Pam yatak odasının
penceresinde belirdi ve pencereden dışarı baktı.
Just at this moment Pam appeared at her bedroom
window, opened it and looked out.
“Memur hanım, memur hanım, bu adam benim
evime zorla girmeye kalkışıyordu ama bu genç hanım
benim arkadaşım.”
"Officer, officer. That man is certainly
trespassing, but the young lady is my friend."
Pam’s ex-husband was taken away as soon as the
constable’s colleague appeared and Daisy was invited inside the cottage
to clean up and have a hot cup of cocoa.
“Gerçekten çok şanslıyız,” dedi
Daisy.
"Well, that was a bit of luck." said Daisy.
“Gecenin bir yarısı Jim’i yatak odasının penceresinden bakarken
"To be able to film him looking in your window
at night and have the whole scene witnessed by the police.
“Jim’in seni bir daha rahatsız edebileceğini
sanmıyorum.”
I don’t think you’ll be having any more trouble
from Jim!"
Ertesi sabah Daisy saat on birde ofise vardığında,
çalışma masasının üzerindeki vazoda bir demet çiçek
buldu.
Next morning at about eleven Daisy arrived in her
office to find a fresh bunch of flowers in a vase, on her desk.
Yanında da kurşun kalemle yazılmış
bir not vardı.
Nearby was a little note written in pencil.
“Teşekkürler Daisy. Tekrar teşekkür
ederim. Pam.
"Thanks Daisy, thanks again. Pam.
Not:Buzdolabına bir kavanoz ev yapımı
erik reçeli koydum.”
P.S. I’ve put a pot of homemade greengage jam in
your fridge."
