Daisy se había levantado temprano esa mañana de primavera porque estaba trabajando en un caso en una ciudad vecina.

Daisy had got up early that spring morning because she was working on a case in the nearby town.

Llegó a la oficina a las ocho menos cuarto con una bolsa de papel en la mano que contenía bollos de nata y se moría por una taza de café.

She arrived at her office with a paper bag in her hand containing fresh cream buns at a quarter to eight and was dying for a cup of coffee.

Al poner la llave en la cerradura, una voz de mujer la llamó, "Está abierta, Daisy.'"

As she put the key in the lock, a woman’s voice called out, "It’s open, Daisy."

Era Pam, la limpiadora.

It was Pam, the cleaner.

"¿Que tal un desayuno, Pam?" dijo Daisy con una sonrisa y se dio cuenta de que obviamente, Pam había estado llorando.

"How about some breakfast, Pam?" said Daisy with a smile and then noticed Pam had obviously been crying.

"Pam, ¿qué ha pasado?

"Pam, whatever has happened?

Ven, siéntate y desayuna algo conmigo.

Come on sit down and have some breakfast with me.

Cuéntame por favor qué te preocupa."

Please tell me what’s bothering you."

Pam era una mujer muy trabajadora con dos bocas que alimentar.   

Pam was a hard-working woman with two children to bring up.

Limpiaba todo el edificio, lo que significaba siete oficinas.

She did the cleaning for the whole building which meant seven offices.

"Jim ha estado presionándome de nuevo con los niños.

"Jim has been on to me again about the children.

Sabes que no tiene ningún derecho legal para verlos y realmente no puede haberles prestado menos atención, y nunca lo ha hecho”.

You know he has no legal right to see them and he really couldn’t care less about them, and never has."

"Pongamos el agua a hervir."

"Let’s put the kettle on."

"Daisy comenzó a preparar el café instantáneo y ofreció a Pam un bollo,

Daisy began preparing the instant coffee and offered Pam a bun,

"Y ahora, ¿por qué no empiezas desde el principio?."

"Now, why don’t you start from the beginning?"

Pam la miró muy preocupada y empezó:

Pam looked extremely troubled and went on:

"Verá, cuando nos divorciamos ni siquiera pidió ver a sus hijos.

"You see, when we got divorced he didn’t even ask to see his children.

Ahora no tiene dinero y está intentando torturarme para que le de algo de dinero con el truco de que si no se lo doy se llevará a los niños."

Now he’s got no money, he’s trying to torture me into giving him some with the threat that otherwise he’ll get the children away from me."

"No creo que pueda hacerlo fácilmente, Pam," razonó Daisy.

"I don’t think he can do that easily, Pam," Daisy reasoned.

Pam aceptó otro bollo.

Pam accepted another bun.

"No Daisy, fácilmente no, pero es muy vengativo y está intentando hacer de mi vida un infierno."

"No Daisy, not easily, but he’s very vindictive and he’s threatened to make my life a hell."

"Bueno, sólo tenemos que esperar y ver qué pasa.

"Well, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Mira, si se pone violento, lo único que tienes que hacer es llamar a la policía."

Look, if he gets violent all you have to do is call the police."

"Conozco a Jim, si no le doy el dinero hará lo que dice."

"I know Jim, if I don’t give him money he’ll be as good as his word."

"Tres días más tarde Daisy recibió una llamada de teléfono.

Three days later Daisy got a telephone call.

"Daisy, soy Pam. Me estoy volviendo loca.

"Daisy, it’s Pam. I’m going round the bend.

Jim ha estado viniendo a dar vueltas por mi casa todas las noches después de que cierren los bares intentando mirar a través de la ventana de mi habitación y haciendo ruidos raros.

Jim’s been coming round to my house every night after the pubs close trying to see through my bedroom window and making strange noises.

Está intentando ponerme de los nervios para que abandone y le dé todo el dinero que me pidió.

He’s trying to get on my nerves so that I’ll give in and hand over all the money he asks for.

No he dormido en tres días."

I haven’t slept for three days."

"¿Has informado a la policía?"

" Have you informed the police about it?"

"Jim me acaba de telefonear y me ha dicho que si llamo a la policía, les dirá que me imagino cosas, que estoy histérica y soy una enferma mental y que no debería tener los niños bajo mi custodia.

"Jim telephoned me just now and said that if I call the police in, he’ll tell them I’m imagining things and hysterical and mentally ill and shouldn’t have his children in my custody.

¿Qué voy a hacer Daisy? Estoy desesperada."

What am I going to do Daisy? I feel desperate."

"De acuerdo Pam, dame tu dirección y veré qué puedo hacer."

"All right Pam, tell me your address and I’ll see what I can do."

Daisy fue a Trends, su tienda de televisión, radio y ordenadores, y dijo al Sr. Ranjee, el propietario de la tienda.

Daisy went round to Trends, her local television, radio and computer shop, and asked to speak to Mr. Ranjee, the owner of the shop.

"Sr. Ranjee, ¿cree que podría prestarme una cámara de vídeo durante un par  de días?"

"Mr. Ranjee, do you think you could lend me a camcorder for a couple of days?"

Daisy había encontrado al ladrón que robaba en la tienda hacía unos meses,

Daisy had found the thief who was stealing from the shop a few months’ ago

y el Sr. Ranjee siempre le había dicho que si alguna vez necesitaba algo, por favor se lo pidiera.

and Mr. Ranjee had always said that if ever she needed something, please to come and ask for it.

"Por supuesto, Srta. Hamilton. Se refiere a una que funcione en la oscuridad.

"Of course, Miss Hamilton. You say you want one that works in the dark.

Mm - tome esta. ¿Sabe como utilizarla? Deje que le enseñe. "

Mm - take this. Do you know how to use it? Let me show you."

El Sr. Ranjee se pasó la media hora siguiente explicando a Daisy algunos trucos elementales de la cámara de vídeo.

Mr. Ranjee spent the next half hour teaching Daisy some elementary camcorder tricks.

Daisy decidió ir cerca de la casa de Pam esa noche alrededor de las diez armada con la cámara y el impermeable.  

Daisy decided to go around to Pam’s house at about ten that evening armed with the camcorder and its rain-proof covering.

También llevaba un silbato en el bolsillo y una barra de Mars para matar el tiempo.

She also had a whistle in her pocket and a Mars bar to while away the time.

"¡Oh no! Está empezando a llover," exclamó Daisy para sí misma.

"Oh no! It’s beginning to rain," Daisy exclaimed to herself.

¡Siempre que tenía un trabajo de noche, irremisiblemente empezaba a llover!

Whenever she had a job on at night it invariably rained.

Afortunadamente, esta vez había llevado un impermeable de plástico con capucha.

Fortunately, this time, she had brought a plastic mac and hood with her.

A esas horas de la noche había poca gente por allí.

At that time of night there were few people around.

Pam le había explicado que vivía en una vieja casita, y que su dormitorio estaba a la vuelta, dando al jardín.

Pam had explained that she lived in an old cottage, and that her bedroom was round the back facing the garden.

Cuando llegó Daisy, fue a la parte trasera de la casa, trepó por la valla  

When Daisy arrived, she went to the back of the cottage, climbed over the low fence

y vio que había un trastero en ruinas en la parte de abajo del jardín.

and saw there was a tumble-down tool shed at the bottom of the garden.

"Ahí es donde me esconderé y esperaré a ese monstruo.

"That’s where I’ll hide and wait for that monster.

"Como intente hacer daño a Pam", pensó Daisy.

How dare he try to hurt dear Pam," thought Daisy.

Una vez dentro de la caseta, Daisy escuchó algo parecido a una maceta caer sobre el suelo del exterior

Once inside the shed Daisy heard something like a flower-pot fall to the ground outside

y se agachó para que no pudieran verla a través de la pequeña y sucia ventana.

and crouched down so that she couldn’t be seen through the small dirty window.

Aparentemente era un lugar de reunión para los gatos, ya que escuchó maullidos.

Apparently it was a meeting-place for cats, for she heard miaowing.

"Desde luego si el ex-marido de Pam quiere repetir la actuación, será mejor librarme de esos gatos para que no se asuste.

"Certainly if Pam’s ex-husband wants to repeat his previous performance, I’d better get rid of those cats so he’s not scared off."

"Abrió la puerta de la caseta cautelosamente y lanzó un zapato viejo, que había encontrado dentro, a los gatos que desaparecieron rápidamente.

She opened the shed door warily and threw an old shoe she had found inside at the cats, who hastily vanished.

Ahora todo estaba tranquilo de nuevo.

Now everything was quiet again.

Dos horas más tarde, Daisy, entumecida por el frío y la humedad, se levantó de la vieja mecedora en la que había estado sentada.

Two hours later Daisy, very stiff from the damp and cold, got up from the ancient wicker chair she had been sitting on.

"No podré aguantarlo mucho más" se quejó para sí misma.

"I can’t stand it much longer" she moaned to herself.

Entonces escuchó el ruido de una botas Wellington crujiendo por el húmedo follaje.

Then she thought she heard the noise of Wellington boots sloshing through the damp foliage.

Alguien estaba arrastrándose hacia la casa.

Someone was creeping towards the house.

A Daisy le dolían los brazos por la forzada inactividad y estuvo a punto de dejar caer la cámara.

Daisy’s arms ached because of the enforced inaction and she nearly dropped the camcorder.

Se quitó los zapatos y se deslizó hacia fuera a través de la puerta entreabierta de la caseta.

She stepped out of her shoes and slipped out of the partially-open shed door.

Justo en ese momento pasó un coche con las luces encendidas y Daisy pudo verlo con claridad.

At that very moment a car passed by with its lights fully on and Daisy could see quite clearly:

El ex-marido de Pam estaba espiando por la ventana de su dormitorio.

Pam’s husband was spying into her bedroom window.

Daisy decidió actuar con rapidez y encendió la cámara.   

Daisy managed to act quickly and turned the camcorder on.

La lluvia había parado y sólo estaba chispeando.

It was only drizzling now.

El ex-marido de Pam comenzó a gritar y a asustar a su mujer por la ventana.

Pam’s husband began shouting through the window at his ex-wife and threatening her.

Daisy estaba filmando la escena y grabando todas las palabras de amenaza.

Daisy was filming the scene and recording all the menacing words.

De repente la cámara produjo un extraño chirrido.

Suddenly the camcorder made a strange whirring sound.

"¡Puede que se haya quedado bloqueada la cinta!", pensó Daisy con terror.

"Maybe the tape’s blocked!" panicked Daisy.

Intentó apagarla pero pulsó el botón equivocado y el chirrido aumento. 

She tried to turn it off but pushed the wrong button and the whirring sound increased.

En este momento, el ex-marido de Pam se dio cuenta y se volvió furiosamente.

At this point Pam’s ex-husband became aware of it and turned round furiously.

Se dio cuenta de que alguien estaba observándolo y maldijo con vehemencia.

He realized someone was watching him and swore profusely.

Entonces se dirigió hacia Daisy con intención de pegarle.

Then he made towards Daisy as though to hit her.

El primer pensamiento de Daisy fue proteger la cámara con su cuerpo, se dio la vuelta sobre ella y empezó a gritar.

Daisy’s first thought was to protect the camcorder with her body, she turned her back on him and started yelling.

A ella le pareció que el grito duraba una eternidad.

It seemed to her that her yelling lasted an eternity.

De repente un potente foco los iluminó.

Suddenly a strong torch light shone on both of them.

"¿Qué pasa ahí?"

"What’s going on here?"

Era una policía, que miraba con aire autoritario.  

It was a police-woman, looking very determined.

"Le vi saltar la valla," dijo apuntando con la linterna al hombre

"I saw you climbing over the fence," indicating the man with the light of her torch

"Acérquense lentamente los dos.

"Come quietly, both of you.

Les detengo por entrar ilegalmente en una propiedad privada y....."

I'm arresting you for trespassing and ..."

En ese momento apareció Pam en la ventana de su dormitorio, la abrió y miró fuera.

Just at this moment Pam appeared at her bedroom window, opened it and looked out.

"Officer, officer. That man is certainly trespassing, but the young lady is my friend."
