NOĆNA STRAŽA |
Night Watch |
Tog prolećnog
jutra,
Dejzi
je ustala
rano jer
je radila
na jednom
slučaju u
obližnjem gradu.
|
Daisy had got up early that spring morning
because she was working on a case in the nearby town.
|
U svoj biro
je stigla
u 7,45,
noseći u papirnoj
kesi sveže
pecivo sa
kremom i
toliko
željna šolje
kafe. |
She arrived at her office with a paper bag in
her hand containing fresh cream buns at a quarter to eight
and was dying for a cup of coffee. |
Dok
je
stavljala
ključ u bravu,
iznutra se
začuo ženski
glas : »Otvoreno
je, Dejzi »..
|
As she put the key in the lock, a woman’s
voice called out, "It’s open,
Daisy."
|
To
je bila čistačica
Pem.
|
It was Pam, the cleaner.
|
"Hoćes
li da
doručkujes,
Pem ? »rece
Dejzi
smešeći se i
onda
primeti da
je Pem
očito
plakala. |
"How about some breakfast, Pam?" said Daisy
with a smile and then noticed Pam had obviously been crying.
|
"Pem,
šta se desilo?
|
"Pam, whatever has happened?
|
Sedite
da doručkujete sa
mnom.
|
Come on sit down and have some breakfast with
me. |
Recite
mi, molim vas, šta vas
muči.."
|
Please tell me what’s bothering you."
|
Pem
je naporno
radila pošto je
podizala
dvoje dece.
|
Pam was a hard-working woman with two
children to bring up.
|
Čistila
je celu
zgradu, što znači
svih sedam
biroa..
|
She did the cleaning for the whole building
which meant seven offices. |
"Džim
me je ponovo
napadao u
vezi dece.
|
"Jim has been on to me again about the
children.
|
On, znate,
nema zakonskih
prava da ih
vidja, a,
pravo govoreći, ni
sada, a ni
ranije nije se
mnogo
brinuo o
njjima ."
|
You know he has no legal right to see them
and he really couldn’t care less about them, and never has."
|
"Da pristavimo
džezvu."
|
"Let’s put the kettle on."
|
Dejzi
poče da
kuva instant-kafu i
ponudi Pem
pecivom.
|
Daisy began preparing the instant coffee and
offered Pam a bun, |
A, sada,
zašto ne
krenete od
početka
?"
|
"Now, why don’t you start from the
beginning?"
|
Pem
je
izgledala vrlo
uzrujano i
započe:
|
Pam looked extremely troubled and went on:
|
"Vidite,
kad smo
se razveli,
čak nije
ni pitao
da vidi
svoju decu..
|
"You see, when we got divorced he didn’t even
ask to see his children.
|
Sada,
kada je
ostao bez
para,
pokušava da
ih
iznudi
od mene,
preteći da
će, u
suprotnom, da
odvede decu
od mene.
|
Now he’s got no money, he’s trying to torture
me into giving him some with the threat that otherwise he’ll
get the children away from me."
|
"
Mislim
da to ne
može da
uradi baš
tako lako.
Pem," reče
Dejzi. |
"I don’t think he can do that easily, Pam,"
Daisy reasoned.
|
Pem
uze drugi
komad
peciva. |
Pam accepted
another bun.
|
"Ne, Dejzi, to
nije lako,
ali, on je
vrlo zao i
preti da će da
napravi
pakao od
mog života..
|
"No Daisy, not easily, but he’s very
vindictive and he’s threatened to make my life a hell."
|
"U redu,
treba samo
da sačekamo
i videćemo. |
"Well, we’ll just have to wait and see.
|
Znate,
ako postane
nasilan, jedino što
treba da se
uradi je da se pozove
policija.
|
Look, if he gets violent all you have to do
is call the police."
|
"
Poznajem
Džima,
ukoliko mu
ne dam pare,
ostvariće
svoju pretnju."
|
"I know Jim, if I
don’t give him money he’ll be as good as his word."
|
Posle
tri dana,
kod Dejzi
zazvoni
telefon..
|
Three days later Daisy got a telephone call.
|
"Dejzi,
ovde je Pem,
hvata me
ludilo. |
"Daisy, it’s Pam.
I’m going round the bend. |
Džim
dolazi
do moje
kuće svake
noći posle
zatvaranja
paba, pokušava
da viri
kroz prozor
moje
spavaće sobe
i pravi
čudne
zvukove .
|
Jim’s been coming round to my house every
night after the pubs close trying to see through my bedroom
window and making strange noises.
|
Utiče
na moje
nerve kako
bih se predomislila
i dala
mu sav
novac koji
traži. |
He’s trying to get on my nerves so that I’ll
give in and hand over all the money he asks for.
|
Nisam
spavala tri dana. « |
I haven’t slept for three days."
|
"Jeste
li o tome obavestili
policiju ?"
|
" Have
you informed the police about it?"
|
Džim
me je
malopre zvao
i rekao
da, ukoliko
pozovem
policiju, rećiće
im kako
uobražavam,
kako sam
histerična I
mentalno
bolesna i
da
ne bi trebalo
da imam
starateljstvo nad
decom. |
"Jim telephoned me just now and said that if
I call the police in, he’ll tell them I’m imagining things
and hysterical and mentally ill and shouldn’t have his
children in my custody.
|
Sta
da radim,
Dejzi
? Osecam se
očajno."
|
What am I going to do Daisy? I feel
desperate."
|
"U redu,
Pem. Dajte
mi vašu
adresu i
videću šta
mogu da
uradim.."
|
"All right Pam, tell me your address and I’ll
see what I can do."
|
Dejzi
podje do
obližnje prodavnice
Trends za radio,
tv aparate
i
kompjutere,
i
zamoli da
razgovara
sa njenim
vlasnikom g-dinom
Randžijem. |
Daisy went round to Trends, her local
television, radio and computer shop, and asked to speak to
Mr. Ranjee, the owner of the
shop.
|
"G-dine
Randži, da li
biste mi
pozajmili video-kameru na
par dana ?"
|
"Mr. Ranjee, do
you think you could lend me a camcorder for a couple of
days?" |
Dejzi
je pronašla
lopova, koji je,
pre
nekoliko meseci,
krao iz
prodavnice. |
Daisy had found the thief who was stealing
from the shop a few months’ ago
|
i
g-din Randži
je stalno
govorio da,
ukoliko joj
nešto
zatreba, može
da dodje
i da
mu to
zatraži. |
and
Mr. Ranjee had always said that
if ever she needed something, please to come and ask for it.
|
"Naravno, g-djice
Hamilton. Kažete
da želite
neku, koja
snima u
mraku. |
"Of course, Miss Hamilton. You say you want
one that works in the dark.
|
Hmm, uzmite
ovu. Znate
li da
njome
rukujete ?
Dozvolite
da vam
pokažem"
|
Mm - take this. Do you know how to use it?
Let me show you."
|
G-din Randži
je narednih
pola sata
podučavao
Dejzi nekim
osnovnim
cakama sa video-kamerom.
|
Mr. Ranjee spent
the next half hour teaching Daisy some elementary camcorder
tricks.
|
Dejzi
se reši da
oko deset
casova te
veceri
obidje oko
Pemine kuce,
naoružana video-kamerom,
zaštićenom
nepropusnom navlakom.
|
Daisy decided to go around to Pam’s house at
about ten that evening armed with the camcorder and its
rain-proof covering.
|
Takodje
je ponela pištaljku
u džepu i
Marsovu čokoladu da
prekrati
vreme..
|
She also had a whistle in her pocket and a
Mars bar to while away the time.
|
"O, ne!
Počinje da
pada kiša,
reče
Dejzi
za sebe. |
"Oh no! It’s beginning to rain," Daisy
exclaimed to herself.
|
Kad
god je
radila tokom
noći,
moralo je da bude
kiše.
|
Whenever she had a job on at night it
invariably rained.
|
Srećom,
ovog puta
je ponela
plastične kapuljaču i
kabanicu. |
Fortunately, this time, she had brought a
plastic mac and hood with her.
|
U sedam
časova
uveče, okolo
nije
bilo mnogo
sveta,.
|
At that time of night there were few people
around.
|
Pem
joj je
objasnila
da živi u
staroj
kućici, da
joj je
spavaća soba u
zadnjem
delu i
da gleda
na baštu.
|
Pam had explained that she lived in an old
cottage, and that her bedroom was round the back facing the
garden.
|
Pošto
stiže,
Dejzi zadje
iza kućice,
predje
preko niske
ograde |
When Daisy arrived, she went to the back of
the cottage, climbed over the low fence
|
I spazi
da je
u dnu bašte
dotrajala
šupa za
ostavljanje
alata. |
and
saw there was a tumble-down tool shed at the bottom of the
garden.
|
"Bas tamo
ću da se sakrijem i da
sačekam to
čudoviste.
|
"That’s where I’ll hide and wait for that
monster.
|
Kako
se usudjuje da
povredi
dragu Pem."
pomisli
Dejzi. |
How dare he try to hurt dear Pam," thought
Daisy. |
Samo
što se
sklonila u zaklon,
Dejzi ču
kao da
se negde
napolju razbila
vaza |
Once inside the shed Daisy heard something
like a flower-pot fall to the ground outside
|
i
sagnu se da ne bi
mogli da je vide
kroz
zamazani prozorčić.
|
and
crouched down so that she couldn’t be seen through the small
dirty window.
|
Ovo
je
verovatno bilo
sastajalište
mačaka
jer
začu
mjaukanje. |
Apparently it was a meeting-place for cats,
for she heard miaowing.
|
Ako
bivši Pemin
muž hoće
da
ponovi
svoju
predstavu, svakako
je bolje
da oteram
ove macke
da ga
ne bi
uplašile."
|
"Certainly if Pam’s ex-husband wants to
repeat his previous performance, I’d better get rid of those
cats so he’s not scared off."
|
Oprezno
otvori
vrata šupe
i baci
na mačke
staru
cipelu koju
je unutra
pronašla,
tako da one
brzo
pobegoše. |
She opened the shed door warily and threw an
old shoe she had found inside at the cats,
who hastily vanished.
|
Sada
je opet sve
bilo mirno.
|
Now everything was quiet again.
|
Dva
sata
kasnije, Dejzi,
sva
odrvenela od
vlage i
hladnoce,
ustade iz
fotelje od
pruća u
kojoj je
sedela. |
Two hours later Daisy, very stiff from the
damp and cold, got up from the ancient wicker chair she had
been sitting on. |
"Neću
moći još
dugo da
izdrzim"
požali se sama
sebi.
|
"I can’t stand it much longer" she moaned to
herself.
|
Učinilo
joj
se da je
čula kako
neko u
Velingtonovim čizmama
gazi kroz
mokro lišće.
|
Then she thought she heard the noise of
Wellington
boots sloshing through the damp foliage.
|
Neko
se šunjao ka
kuci. |
Someone was creeping towards the house.
|
Dejzi
su bolele
ruke jer
ih dugo
nije
pomerala, pa, umalo
ispusti video-kameru.
|
Daisy’s arms ached because of the enforced
inaction and she nearly dropped the camcorder.
|
Izu
cipele i
iskrade se kroz
poluotvorena
vrata šupe.
|
She stepped out of her shoes and slipped out
of the partially-open shed door.
|
Baš
tog trenutka,
neka kola
sa jakim
svetlima
prodjoše i
Dejzi je
mogla
sasvim jasno
da vidi:
|
At that very moment a car passed by with its
lights fully on and Daisy could see quite clearly:
|
Kako
Pemin muž
viri kroz
prozor
njene spavaće
sobe. |
Pam’s husband was spying into her bedroom
window. |
Dejzi
uspe brzo
da reaguje
i
da
ukljuci video-kameru. |
Daisy managed to act quickly and turned the
camcorder on.
|
Sada
je padala
samo sitna
kisa.
|
It was only drizzling now.
|
Pemin
muž poče
da
viče
kroz prozor
i da
preti
svojoj bivšoj
zeni. |
Pam’s husband began shouting through the
window at his ex-wife and threatening her.
|
Dejzi
je snimila
scenu i zabeležila
sve
izgovorene pretnje. |
Daisy was filming the scene and recording all
the menacing words.
|
Odjednom,
video-kamera
poče čudno
da bruji. |
Suddenly the camcorder made a strange
whirring sound.
|
"Možda
se traka
blokirala !" uspaniči se
Dejzi.
|
"Maybe the tape’s blocked!" panicked Daisy.
|
Ona
pokuša da je
iskljuci,
ali, pritisnu
pogrešno
dugme i brujanje se
pojača. |
She tried to turn it off but pushed the wrong
button and the whirring sound increased.
|
U
tom trenutku,
Pemin bivši
muz postade
svestan šta se
dogadja i
besno se okrete.
|
At this point Pam’s ex-husband became aware
of it and turned round furiously.
|
Shvatio
je da
ga neko
uhodi i
izreče
bezbroj psovki.
|
He realized someone was watching him and
swore profusely.
|
Zatim
krete ka
njoj s namerom
da je
udari. |
Then he made towards Daisy as though to hit
her. |
Dejzina
prva
pomisao je
bila da
zaštiti video-kameru
svojim
telom, pa mu
okrete
ledja i
poče da
viče. |
Daisy’s first thought was to protect the
camcorder with her body, she
turned her back on him and started yelling.
|
Činilo
joj se da je v
čitavu
večnost. |
It seemed to her that her yelling lasted an
eternity.
|
Iznenada,
oboje behu
osvetljeni
jakom baterijskom
lampom.
|
Suddenly a strong torch light shone on both
of them.
|
"Šta
se ovde dešava ?"
|
"What’s going on
here?"
|
To
je bila pozornica,
koja je
izgledala vrlo
odlučno.
|
It was a police-woman, looking very determined.
|
"Videla
sam vas
kako
preskačete ogradu,
" pokazivala
je na
muškarca
svetlošću svoje
lampe. |
"I saw you climbing over the fence,"
indicating the man with the light of her torch
|
"Oboje
polako
pridjite.
|
"Come quietly, both of you.
|
Hapsim
vas zbog
upada na
tudje
imanje i…"
|
I'm arresting you for trespassing and ..."
|
Baš
u tom trenutku se
pojavi Pem
na prozoru
svoje
spavaće sobe,
otvori ga
i pogleda
kroz njega.
|
Just at this moment Pam appeared at her
bedroom window, opened it and looked out.
|
"Pozornice,
pozornice,
taj čovek
sigurno da
narušava
imanje, ali,
mlada dama
je moja
prijateljica.."
|
"Officer, officer. That man is certainly
trespassing, but the young lady is my friend."
|
Odveli
su bivšeg
Peminog
muza čim
je stigao
drugi
pozornik, pa pozvaše
Dejzi u
kućicu da se
očisti i
popije
šolju toplog
kakaoa..
|
Pam’s ex-husband was taken away as soon as
the constable’s colleague appeared and Daisy was invited
inside the cottage to clean up and have a hot cup of cocoa.
|
"Dakle,
bilo je
i malo
sreće,."
reče
Dejzi.
|
"Well, that was a bit of luck." said Daisy.
|
"Da
budem u
stanju da
ga snimim
dok
gleda
noću
kroz tvoj
prozor i
da čitavoj
sceni
prisustvuje policija.
|
"To be able to film him looking in your
window at night and have the whole scene witnessed by the
police.
|
Ne
verujem da će
ti Džim
više
praviti probleme !"
|
I don’t think you’ll be having any more
trouble from Jim!"
|
Sledećeg
jutra oko
jedanaest,
Dejzi stiže u
svoj biro i
zateče u
vazi na
svom
stolu
buket
svežega
cveća.
|
Next morning at about eleven
Daisy arrived in her office to
find a fresh bunch of flowers in a vase, on her desk.
|
Malo
dalje je
bila
olovkom ispisana
kratka
poruka.:
|
Nearby was a little note written in pencil.
|
"Hvala
Dejzi, jos
jednom
hvala. Pem.
|
"Thanks Daisy, thanks again. Pam.
|
P.S. Stavila
sam u tvoj
frižider
teglu domaćeg
džema od
šljiva.
|
P.S. I’ve put a pot of homemade greengage jam
in your fridge." |
